Welding Project for SKOOL is Engine Hoist. Any suggestions?
Engine hoists are pretty well-engineered already. Just take a look at one and copy it, trying to make it more collapsible.
A worthwhile project might be to make an engine hoist that can be used to pull the engine out of a full-size van. Have you ever tried to use a regular cherry-picker in a van? PITA. It would need to have a very long arm, and a narrow yet stable base.
Another idea might be an engine hoist that can be used on dirt or gravel safely. You know, for white trash like me that don't always have a concrete slab to work on.

so far.....
This hoist will be able to break into 3 pieces. Base, Upright, Arm

Next is to decide on wheels and Ram.
New pix.
Coming Along.

Inner weld looks kind of crappy there, how much benetration are you getting?

The weak spot is at the base of the vertical upright. The weld to the baseplate on the backside is going to be under tension when the arm is under load. I would of leaned the vertical back away from the hook and added some braces down to the legs. Like this one, for example:

Hmm I would be worrying about it tipping backwards. In the picture the arm is not really that high, it will have to go higher to clear the bumper and what not.
your moment about the lower mounting point of the hydrualic ram is too far to the back of the hoist. Your **** will tip over. if you move your lift arm closer to the hydraulic pump you may be able to help it balance. good luck!

Thats what I was thinking, and that can't be good.

you should make a lift that is designes to lift a civic front by the tow hooks so that we can remove the engine from the bottom (pull out the side wheel well)
Here's an Idea for ya.
Make the hoist have a place to bolt the engine block too, ( Engine stand) .
One less thing taking up room in the shop, It's hard to make a hoist stand out when there's tons of them out there.
Like someone said , Make it fold up to take up less Sq Ft, That would would be cool.
And , Yes the base is the week point, plus too much weight at the back end.
Good luck!

that has been done already. . .
i will 3rd the weak base. i one time left the extra supports off my stand and it ripped the base right off.
