I saw somewhere else where they said "F1 legal trim" evidently you dont have ot run a wing in F1...

It's always fun to see some real money guys playing the LSR game. Honestly though, I'm more impressed with the privateers like John Romero from AEM. He went 195.818 mph at Bonneville this year in a 2000 Civic Coupe. With 1500cc...
As for the wings, maybe we'll see them if they run the BAR car at the salt again next year. I seriously doubt they'll go as fast as they did on asphalt in Mojave. They might need some wing to get all the power down.

For anyone who's interested, there's an article about this in the February issue of Racecar Engineering. I haven't had a chance to read the whole article yet, but it looks like it covers a lot of the technical issues they dealt with for this.
This is cool and all... But didnt the old Indy/IRL cars of a few years ago pulled 235mph+ AVERAGE laps at places like Indianapolis? I'm pretty sure they were easily topping 250mph in RACE trim back then. I would imagine even minus the wings an F1 car's body is not really optimized for top speed runs.

When Luyendyk set the Lap record at Indianapolis his straight line trap speeds were 241mph, and low corner speeds were in the 237 range. The IndyCar/CART lap times were done with surprisingly little variation in speed.. just wide open all the way around.
In 1986 AJ Foyt climbed in what was an essentially an IndyCar with a body, stuffed with an Oldsmobile quad 4 at Fort Stockton Texas (7 mile test track) and ran a trap speed of 293mph and an average lap of 257mph. Still the closed course record.

Apples & oranges. Turbos on alcohol vs. N.A. on gas...
fuel or not, turbo or not.. the cars because of rules have been limited to 800 to 900 HP. So when you talk about cd and all, I dont think you are going to see much difference.
Also, being AJ he wanted the closed course record to be at Indianapolis, so before he took the Oldsmobile Aerotech to Fort Stockton to set the record, he took it to Indianapolis, where he ran a lap of 217mph.. (1mph faster than the track record in 1986 when the record was set) When he saw they needed to go faster thats when they went to Texas.
Point being, because of rules to limit the speeds of the cars, i dont know that you are ever going to see much faster than the 250, 260 that we are seeing.

Here is a real nice article written about Don Vesco... at the bottom.

Sadly, Don has passed on... Their Turbinator, A T55 gas turbine wheel driven land speed "car" home page is here:

Be sure to view the video of the 470 mph run here: The big video is worth downloading

Much as Vesco was a stud and as impressive as the Tubinator went, I can never really think of it in the same catigory of automotive history as the LSR cars racers with piston engines. The Summers Brothers, Al Teague and current fast guy Tom Burkland all need mention here.

More info on Burkand here: http://www.ugofadini.com/burklandstory1.html
Al Teague: http://www.alteague.com/
Sam Wheeler is another hero. How about 332.410mph on 1350cc....

Do you have the history on this one (Hondaliner 2003)? I think John Beckett crashed and passed on this year, but my memory is getting poor...

is this the guy who built the 1.5 litre b16 that revved out to 10 000 rpm? is so there was an article on his build in HCI magazine in januaries edition. its not very technical as its written for ricers. but it was still a pretty dang cool build. 232 hp at 9700 rpm and 132 ft lbs of torque.

Yeah, that's the guy. I was only up there two days last year. His car had just wrecked as I was leaving to come home, so I don't know much. He was an East coast racer, I think. It was a Honda in body, only. Had some manner of big, American push-rod lump in it. Its always sad when anything like that happens.

Yeah. From what he and John Concialdi were saying, they set the class record on their lowest boost setting. It rained and the event shut down before they could really turn up the flame. This year might be interesting...

Thanks, that puts the power plant in perspective. I agree, it's sad when these accidents happen. He seemed like a real nice guy from the writeups. RIP.

thought their goal was to top 400kph as raced at the track. wingless ???
</TD></TR></TABLE>
the goal was to run a FIA legal F1 car to 400kph, that car is still FIA legal.
F1 cars have a lot of disadvantages in LSR racing - wide tires, low weight, high aero drag due to the tires, etc.
