Default Hytech header: Is "heat wrap" actually bad for the header?

I just got a (used) stainless, tri-y, Hytech side exit drag race header. I bought it with the heat wrap already on it. My question is will the wrap eventually harm or crack the header? Is it worth it to get it coated instead of the wrap? I have had wrapped headers before that turned out fine--but I want this one to last.[IMG][/IMG]

Yeah--Bisi used it at some point on his d15. To be honest, I almost just want to remove the wrap just to see the actual header! I will probably wind up taking the wrap off and getting it Jet-Hot coated or something similar.

I would suggest removing the wrap and having the header coated inside and out if you want it to last as long as possible. It isn't necessary to have it coated (since it's stainless), but the coating will help to protect the header and improve performance by a very slight amount. Either way, I would definitely remove the current wrap.

That's like covering a reef girls ***

I bought my Hytech the same way and took the wrap off.

Was that before or after Randy Monroe was involved?

On both of the hytech headers that I've had, John Grudynski has specifically told me NOT to wrap them.....

Because it is detrimental to the header.

Because the wrap holds moisture and the headers slowly erode. Mild steel is the worst, I have taken "heat" wrap off some and found it was the only thing holding the header together.

Interesting--about him telling you not to wrap the headers. I bought this header from Bisi--who if you notice now does NOT wrap his headers anymore--he gets them coated. I want the heat retaining qualities of the wrap, but I have heard that it leads headers to an early death (cracking and the like). Also, I have HEARD that the reason NASCAR racers don't wrap their headers is because even by the end of a 400-500 mile race--a wrapped header would be junk!! Can anyone verify if Nascar racers wrap/don't wrap headers?

So Don, on a stainless header do you think it would be wise to remove the wrap?

Unwrapping it right now....I will post pics soon. thanks for all the replies guys. I just actually read a good article that was linked from HT on the major pitfalls of wrapping headers. Not a good thing.

I know how they got this damn wrap in between the crevices on this header!! Maybe whoever wrapped it took the header apart, and "spread" the tubes a bit to pull the wrap out from in between the primaries. Its damn near impossible to pull out this scratchy wrap--and the particles are scratching up my throat.....I will post pics as soon as this wrap wants to come off.....

I never had problems with wrap on stainless headers. I have to wrap mine, because they go so close to the oil cooler lines.
