Transmission troubles???
i replaced the clutch a few days ago because there was a whirring sound coming from the transmission area. i went by a few shops and they all swore it was the throw out bearing. one mechanic said it was a main shaft bearing and a new trransmission is needed, but after i put the new one in the same sound exists. the sound goes away while the clutch is in, but gets louder with rpm and is very very loud on downshifts (which i have stopped doing in fear of breaking something). Has anyone had a similiar problem or any clue what may be going on with it?
I changed the release (throw out) bearing and while i was there the disk and pressure plate. i didnt even think to look at the input shaft bearing. i have to take it all apart again so i will see what kind of shape it is in.
Theres a good write up from Bauly Civic on how to do this, its pretty simple to do once you get the transmission apart. Ive done about 10 of these now, takes me an hr once the transmission hits my work bench. Get OEM HONDA BOND tho to re-seal the transmission back up, Ive ussed the cheap **** from autozone and it was just that cheap **** the whole case leaked and had to be taken out again and resealed properly.
A helpfull trick is to use a flatt head screw driver to push the old bearing out and a large socket to push the new one in. You want to hit the outside of it NOT the ball bearings or the inner race or you'll mess that one up as well.
