Default LS to ITR w/ LSD tranny...but with OH noes***Update 1***

Hey, Honda-tech. Long time reader first time poster with some goodies. I picked up this ITR tranny for a crazy deal, but it comes with a couple of issues.
I'll be updating this thread as i go along and get the parts. So far i know i'll need new bearings, seals, countershaft and final drive. I was aware of the damage when i bought it but not to the extent, gears are still good so i can still take advange of the short geared ITR tranny. If the gears were messed it be a complete loss for another ITR but luckily it ain't that bad.

Casing ohhh ahhhhh.

So i open it up, as soon i open it i see the cancer.

^very bottom of the countershaft is fubard

so me and flexin5 pulleverything out lay it on the flo, honestly these tranny's are really basic

this link helped me out alot:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=795700

I pull this from the tranny magnet

^You can see here all the countershaft teeth..and random pieces of shrapnel lol

LSD isn't too bad, pretty banged up.I need a new final drive for sure

Pics of the countershaft

How do the Synchros look to you guys, Should i replace them or are they okay..
I've never seen worn syncros so i don't have much to go off of.

and of course the LSD in all its glory still okay

now all in all, I'm not too woried i picked it up for 6 bills CDN so even if i fix the final drive and countershaft i'll still be ahead of the 1200 CDN we usually see around toronto. Even if i did get one for 1200 all intact i would have replaced the syncros regardless so i feel good about that.

Now, do any of you guys know what i can get a coutershaft either GSR or ITR (same ****) and final drive USDM or JDM doesn't matter. Also what do you think about the synchros replace or keep these ones. Thanks for looking

********UPDATE NOV 17 2005***********

Well, i'm back. I was lucky enough to score a 4.4 Final Drive, Needle bearings, First Gear and Countershaft. After my last post i pm and e-mailed everyone i know to see if they had the parts, lucky enough the day after i asked a buddy of mine someone had went 4.7 and had this available

the same day i got it grabbed a jaw puller (gear puller) and got cracking again on this with Flexin5 and another friend my ours. Pulled all the gears off the old countershaft and slapped them on the new shaft.

you can see the comparison between the old and new countershaft...it was so fuck0rd

and a comparision between old and new final drive:

So basically what i plan do to do is contact gear speed and buy some new synchros, and from acura continue with new bearing, seals, nuts and washers.
I've also decided on buying a stage 1 clutch and lightened flywheel since everything will be pulled off anyway.

any recommendations, comments positive and negative are cool

Wow, good luck with that. Damn, what the hell happened to that tranny.

I'm sure my LS looked like that inside when my ITR LSD grenaded inside it, but I couldn't even open it because the C-clip disappeared. It must have vaporized or something. I sold it for about $50 to HT user "CHEETAH".

Anyway, good luck with that. As for finding a 4.400 countershaft, just try and post a wanted ad in the Honda Marketplace here (www.hondamarketplace.com). That's where I got mine. I got it from a Honda-tech member for $75 about 4 years ago.

Unfortunately, you can't post there yet until you're a member for 14 days. Try contacting a moderator to see if they can help you out with the posting. Perhaps you can also PM CHEETAH because he rebuilds trannys. However, same deal with that. You have to become a "regular user" before you're allowed to use the PM feature.

You might as well install the 4.785 FD since you need the countershaft and ring gear anyway.

Agreed, the synchros are looking good. You can tell by looking at the "pent roof" of each of the teeth. That "top of the roof" edge should be nice and crisp (red arrows). If it's flattened are mashed, then they're toast. And I second the 4.7 JDM final drive recommendation

What did happen to that tranny?!?!?!

thanks alot guys. I have no clue what happened to the tranny i'm guessing a possible misshift. Tranny came out of a 2000 ITR. Supposedly. the previous owner didn't even bother with fixing it he just went out and bought a new tranny.

I have enough time until next spring so this will be my winter project while i collect the parts needed. Gear-speed is on my top list. I've never felt new syncros nor LSD so this will be interesting

i bought an obx lsd, carbon syncros, bearings, seals, and poly shift bushings its feels awsome best tranny ever im still breaking in my motor so i havent got to grab gears hard or launch hard enough to get the feel of the lsd but im sure it will be awsome.

ya it was fun ripping taking that thing apart. btw: the case is mega fuxored! does anyone know, if a piece of the teeth from the busted gear was to somehow get into the LSD casing, would that cause the LSD to fail? anyway we can check to see if it's good without having to pull it all apart? TIA

Yes, it could cause a failure. I've seen pictures of the OBX LSD disassembled. The stock ITR unit shares the same design principles. To disassemble, you basically remove the bolts of the LSD housing to open the case. Be sure to keep track of the part locations (take pictures) and mark the housing before seperating. I wouldn't remove anything as long as you can see that there is no debris.

I'm pretty sure the LSD is good, if you look at the pics the countershaft got the worse end of the damage. the driveshaft female end of the LSD are in great shape mint even. I've also shaked the LSD to hear anything or seen anything fall out and nothing. so i should be okay there.

I'd at least spin the output shafts by hand to make sure nothing is in there. I agree that you are more than likely OK.
