Default Beginner Autocross Helmet?

What do you guys recommend? Under $100 please!

I saw this at Wal-Mart

Edit: I will probably only be attending the SFR solo2 events...

I've stopped and looked at those WalMart helmets before. I think they've got DOT approval, but not Snell.

If you don't like the free helmets at the events, try a bike shop. You may have a hard time getting one for under $100 though.

Is your head worth less than a $100? I would suggest saving up some more money and getting a quality helmet. Just my opinion.

i think those are motorcycle helmets and will not be approved for autoX.
you need something that is SA rated.

bump because im in the same boat, i need a helmet for $100 but mine can be open face or full face

you are wrong.

M is totally allowed for autox. (and most track events) and i recommend it more than a SA. totally a waste of money over a M for autox.

greg, didnt you find the visor would hit the top of the window frame if you looked left?

M helmets are fine. I use an M2000 Shoei that a friend gave me and it is more than adequate.

Still, don't get in the habit of cheaping out when it comes to safety equipment.

this isnt a case of "cheaping out."

its about knowing what you are paying for, and what you need, and not paying extra for a sticker and a fireproof layer on a helmet that is more likely a heavier weight with less visibility.

I understand that, I'm just saying that you wouldn't want to use the same rationale if moving up to track days and going to buy a track helmet, or harnesses, or a rollbar, etc.

nope. (wondering if it should and i´m not looking ahead enough...)

seriously though, no issues. its is a super short visor. really just there to make the helmet not look stupid. stock si seats, i´m 5´11"

i really prefer the open face for autox. i feel like i can see more, and it keeps me cooler since i get all out of breath when i drive. it was in the car when it got stolen, and i liked it enough that i just ordered another one.

yeah i guess it was only an issue when there was a full rollcage in there. i know i wouldnt have had room for a open face visor like that if i tried. but i guess that rollbar and padding make the difference.

i was just curious. thanks.

Don't go with something that is just DOT approved. DOT approval is little more than a promise that the helmet will be made to their minimum standard. They are not tested that I know of. Look for a Snell certification. If it's Snell certified, it has passed the same tests as any other Snell helmet, no matter how much it costs. A Snell M-rating is fine for autocross and most track days. If you have any desire to race or SCCA TT, then an SA rating is required. Some track day sanctioning bodies are moving toward requiring an SA rating.

That's what my girlfriend and I are using. I got the full face for about 130, and she's using the open face and it was under 100. No complaints here.

My friend picked up a JRC or something like that from a bike shop for around the same price, and I've seen a few people using them as well.

Go on ebay. I got my m2000 full-face helmet there for autox for about $30. If I was on track, I would definitely buy a really good helmet. I just don't see the need for an expensive on at an autox.
