Carbureted Idle Problem...Surging....Dying...
I'm having problems with my 1988 Lude...it's a 2.0S...and it's carburetored. It's a 5 speed(if it matters). 145k miles. Anyway, I just bought it 2 weeks ago and it is kind of hard to start when it's cold, but once it's running, it idles at 2500 RPM's, but not consistently. Sometimes it just flat out dies at idle, other times it will idle at anywhere between 1500 and 3000 rpms. It drives ok, but when you get on the gas really hard, it feels like it's missing something. I have a very good mechanical background, and I have thought that this is a vacuum leak, but I have sprayed brake cleaner all over everything, and it doesn't seem to effect the idle. The next step is for me to pull the carbs off and give them a good cleaning. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be???
Well, I cleaned the carb and got everything hooked back up. I also pulled the air filter out because it seems old. I plan on fitting it with a cone style filter....anyway, it seems to run a little bit better. It doesn't die when I come up to stop signs, but it still doesn't seem quite right. The idle is all over the place(between 1000 & 2500rpms), but it's smooth now. When I put my hand over the air intake tube, the idle goes all the way up to 4000rpms....Does this seem like a vacuum leak to anyone else???
