Default inoperable temp gauge

I have an '89 accord, 2.0, carbureted, 5spd. I replaced the head gasket recently due to it blowing. When I first started driving after the new head gasket I noticed that the temp gauge was pegged out. I checked the fluid and replaced the temperature sending unit but the temp gauge is still pegged out. My only guess is that a wire running from the sending unit to the gauge is bad. Other than that I have no idea what the problem could be.

does gauge go to H as soon as u put the key on ??? if so , unplug the sending unit, if it still does it ,u might have (A) the wire pinched to ground or (B) a bad temp gauge ... the sending unit is the single wire unit on the head , below the distributor right ??? i believe wire color is yellow/green??...

When I turn the key on the temp gauge goes up to H. I unplugged the sending unit wire and the gauge still pegged out. Hopefully I when I inspect the wires something will be grounded somewhere.
