Default Slammed on my brakes, now my steering wheel shakes!!!!

On my way home today on the freeway I had to really SLAM on the brakes the car skidded a good 60 feet. Shortley after I noticed my steering shakes really bad Is it possible my brake rotors got warped? The wheel seems to shake more at lower speeds. Do I need new rotors? Is my alignment off? Help

As already mentioned, your rotors are warped. You can have them turned and they'll be as good as new. Make sure you use a torque wrench when tightening the lug nuts so that each one is torqued down the same and to spec. That should keep the rotors from warping as easy. And check them anytime the shop tightens your lug nuts. They'll be way tighter than spec most of the time.

If your rotors warped that easily(although that is pretty harsh), you might just want to get a new set of rotors. Just my ni-en.

How fast were you going? Do you have ABS? I bet it is your tires! Go take off your front tires and inspect them for wear! Then post the answer.

I'd check your tires for flat spots.

I agree, it could be that your tires were worn in one place because you skidded 60 ft. Do you hear noise coming from your tires? My steering wheel shock like a **** when I first bought it, then I looked at my tires and one of the tires had a broken reinforcement. Got new tires and the wheel doesn't shake anymore.

probably flat spotted your tires, that would be my first guess. And if those are good then its your brakes

no abs=flat spot... get new tires.. OR JUST SMOKE THEM FOR A FEW MINS!

abs=warped rotors

Get your rotors resurfaced and your car will be fine.

How can you say that without knowing whether or not he has ABS? If his wheels locked up the tires definatly have flat spots. It's possible the rotors are warped also... but if the tires locked up, flat spots are inevitable.

if it was his rotors his car would only shake while breaking...not while driving....if its shaking while hes driving then it would mean his tires are off balance

I am using SSR 15x7 type-x wheels with Kumho Ecsta 195/50 tires, and my brakes are Brembo blanks, metal master pads and goodridge ss lines. And no ABS on my car hence the skid. Will rolling around on warped rotors temporarily mess up anything else on the car?

I don't think your tires are wasted, cause my ABS doesn't work, and i locked up on my Nittos for about 100ft (yeah i was doin 115 and decided to slow down) they shook like hell, so bad that my watch on my hand would shake when holding the steering wheel enough to hurt my wrist. but i burned them a bit, and they're fine now and i still have a good amount of tread.

I find it surprsing nobody clarified if the steering wheel shakiness comes while braking or while driving. If while driving without braking, its not the rotors!

I was thinking the same thing. This guy is correct. If it only shakes when you brake, then its the rotors. New rotors average about 20 bucks a piece ($25 front, $15 for rear)

Halo, inspect your tires for flat spots and make sure your lug nuts are tightened.

Same problem he had ... it was the tires for sure. Just measured everything and it looks to be in spec ... except for the tire ... will high speed test on freeway, slam on brakes and come back and tell you if there is still shaking (had tires rotated this morning ... got a free tire b/c of $10 warranty I got!)

check out http://www.fastbrakes.com and look at upgrading to the 11.1" ITR spec front brakes and you wont be warping them anymore.
