Default Snap-on Mig welders

Which machine would you get? Are these overpriced or worth the money?

I'd stick to the hobart/miller machines from everything I've researched... but take my advice with a grain of salt... im no welder.

The majority of products I've seen from snap-on are just a marked up ripoff. Not all... but most... and the majority of us don't have a nice little snap-on truck coming to us when he/she feels like it for replacements. I love craftsman for the fact that I can just walk into sears, and walk out with a replacement.

I recently bought an older model snap on mig welder. "matco"

140amp, but it works cherry. Good to do quick weldings, etc. Lots of settings you can play with to.

I bought this one , which was on sale for 1700 from a local snap-on dealer. I'll post pics of things I've welded so far.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll buy a tig later on, at least it builds credit.

Thanks again.

The Snap-On dealer does not report to the credit bureaus. You might as well get used to calling him 'Daddy' because the Strap-On dealer bent you over and you took it hard.

Really? I must have misunderstood. There is a site where I check my credit rating, and this account shows up. There something wrong?

What is it with Honda-tech and discrediting the value of a MIG welder? MOST auto applications a MIG welder is MORE than what you need and can do the same job as a TIG welder in half the time. There are times when a TIG is necessary but overall a good MIG welder can not be replaced. With that said $1700 for a MIG welder seems awfully high.

i got that same welder, but i have the tig torch that goes with it. works awesome, the only problem i have with it is you have to buy snap-on consumables, with the exception, that it uses tweeco tips. also it wont hold the 44 lb spools. but good bang for the buck.

No need to spend over 1000 on a mig welder. Just pick something up that is very useful everywhere, something like a 110v mig welder is good.. with 110v, you can take it pretty much anywhere that has a electical outlet. If you want to weld larger materials, bigger the 1/2 or so, then move up to a 220v mig welder. Its not as versitle because 220v outlet is not acessable everywhere, if somewhere does have it, its going to be in the laundry room next to the dryer. So think about little things like that before you put all that money into it.. its a big investment, you don't want to buy a few welders before your satisfied. I just recently picked up a Millermatic 135, good size gas-sheild mig welder, 110v so I can take it anywhere(if I'm not lazy to take it) all for 852 out the door with cart and cylinder. Best investment ever. I have use larger industrial size machines and this one welds just like it, but not as powerful. Make sure you look over at all the matrial that the manufacturer used to make the machine. I was going to pick up a Lincoln SP-135 welder, however I decided not to after the man pointed out something important out. The lincoln wire feed mechanism is made out of hard plastic whereas the miller unit is made out of cast aluminum, a little heavy duty.

if you NEED that much welder then great; $1700 isn't a bad deal; did you get the tig torch and stuff with it?

My friend has that same welder at the shop he works with; VERY nice unit and you could run a 5 mile bead at max amps and it would just chuckle at you.

i'll agree that its probably too much welder and cost too much but you'll probably get most of that back reselling that thing.

On the subject of expensive migs; my mom used to work at a manufacturing plant in the office; i'd go hang out some times in the shop and out there they have 3 millermatic 251 roll around migs and this MONSTER 400amp miller power supply with a spoolmatic mig attachment on it. They probably run a 20lb spool of wire through that thing in a day and all the smaller migs they dont keep wire in them long. They keep a huge cabinet full of spools of different types; mostly l56 wire in 5-20lb spools and it gets restocked bi-weekly

They also have an old (like 1960s) lincoln ac/dc power supply that they use for arc welding; it'll do like 525amps and has 2awg ground and power leads; we put a 1/4" carbon-arc gouging rod in that thing one day and cranked the amps up to the max; that ****** chewed through 1/2" plate steel like a cutting torch to tin foil :D
I was scared of that power supply! the cables would JUMP when you striked an arc; that guy was intense!
