My thoughts go out to his family...

It's sad that we have had several reminders in this past year that safety should always be #1 out on track.

Very sad to hear. I wonder if a HANS device could have helped in his situation.

Please note though, this was a race, not an HPDE.

Still,

From what little I heard the driver hit one of those soft walls but obviously even increased safety devices can only minimize but not eliminate the likely of serious inury or death.

My thoughts go out to the family, what a sad occurence.

Yet another reminder why I spent the money on a seat with head support and a HANS device.

2005 has been really horrible for lower level motorsports... I feel very sorry for the family of this man.

I wish most of the good safetly equipement, i.e. HANS was more affordable.
I will be saving up for a HANS for this comin year.

IMO, the price of a HANS is really nothing. If you race cars, $680-980 is what, a new set of Hoosiers? Lets see here, I can still spend the thousand bucks if I am alive, but its tough to do from inside a box....

I'll have to agree here. I don't think I'd drive a course at speed without one. There have been to many incidents recently for me not to.

This has happened too many times this year, and as racers, we are out of excuses....

Like others said, spending $800 for a full-blown HANS or Isaac unit isn't really that much in the grand scheme of things.

I'm also very happy with my Isaac Link unit, which is only $300. Maybe not as good as a full-fledged system but the cost more than makes up for it.

Unfortunately from talking to some of the racers that I know one holdup is what the sanctioning bodies will approve/require in the near future. I think if the SCCA and NASA came out and said either the HANS or Isaac is a good system and will meet their future requirements that more racers would buy now. In the meantime, I wouldn't want to shell out the money for one system and have it not be approved.

Note that I'm only doing time trials/HPDE - I think if you're a regular HPDE guy running in Group 3 or higher you really should be looking at the Isaac Link or something comparable....

My condolences to the family and competitors at that event.

- Markus

NASA has already said this about the HANS. The Isaac is currently attempting to secure the same certification.

I don't know that I'd use the word "attempting"....

I'm assuming you're referring to the SFI certification?
