Default Sloppy Shifter

I changed the tension rod bushings but it didn't help, all the slop appears to be in the U-joint type thing on the shifter rod (circled). Can these bushings be changed or do I need to replace the whole rod? It looks expensive

sounds like you need a junkyard day. take the whole thing and make it easy on yourself.

i'd be interested in finding where you could buy a new one. seems to me like replacing it with a junkyard part is not much better, considering they would be close to wearing out as well.

There shouldn't be any play in that joint. It should only pivot around those two hinges on the joint. If there's play in the hinges, you need a new shifter rod (or you need to fabricate a replacement). If it's not the problem, your shifter slop could have to do with worn out bushings or loose connections on the shift lever end of that rod. I've also seen situations where worn out engine mounts cause a lot of slop in the shifter (because the engine isn't supported properly in the correct position).

I can grab the shaft right behind that joint and move it an inch in any direction. Sounds like it's toast then.

I agree. the Btch pin would be the first thing i would check. only use the right honda part for replacement if it is bad.

If it was the pin I wouldn't have bothered posting. I was specifically asking about the u-joint at the end of the shifter rod. It is worn out with massive side-to-side play in both hinges.

I looked at the hasport site and only found custom shift linkage for use with engine swaps. Looks like it's either factory or junkyard, probably a no-win situation since one is too expensive and the other will likely be worn as well . . .

Before you go make something yourself or find a custom piece...how did you determine the oem replacement was too expensive? I checked San Leandro Honda's online part servive and it kicked back:
54201-SH3-A04 ROD, GEARSHIFT $40.55

Is that what you meant by too expensive? Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Not the right part, when I looked it was about $75 US, so over $90 Cdn. Not super expensive but more than I want to spend on a non-essential repair on a beater.

yer overthinking this and not being particularly polite about it. the people with the pin suggestion were trying to help.

junkyard part will almost certainly not be worn out as most people never have to replace this part for the life of their honda, and the oem part is the price of a tire.

just fix it.

I used this link:
http://slhondaparts.com/browse...=true

Selected part #14, which is the whole rod, joint and all. That gave me the part number and price I listed.

Were you shopping from the same site?

$41

The other places for slop are the two bushings. The poly versions are cheap. The other thing is that I went from a very sloppy stock shifter feel to very firm feel by ONLY putting in a Skunk2 shortthrow - with tons of lithium grease. Poly bushings going on today.

That site is wonky -- I went back and clicked the same part and this time it said $0.89 . . . maybe it doesn't like my browser.

My integra has the same problem, it feels like it is in nuetral in every gear...I tried to put some washers t take oup the space but it didn't seem to help...i was going to cut/drill out the bolt that was in there hammer the U down a little and use washers to take up any extra space but i decided it was a lot easier to just get a used linkage...I really haven't seen to many cars with this problem so i think it is just one out of a few that has it...just get a used one on ebay or buy a new one should be less that $100 for just the linkage...good luck

Thanks for the hondaautomotiveparts.com link, it works better than the other one. Looks like the shifter rod is the answer. And a new bitch pin
