Okay I just broke in my H22 after a quite extensive rebuild you can learn about by clicking the link in my signature. Anyways, we ran Shell Non-Detergent oil for about 500 miles, changing it three times already. I should be ready to run regular motor oil, and this I ask you:

Should I run a synthetic blend like Castrol GTX or Mobil 1. Or should I just run straight 5w30. I need to know which one will result in longer engine life and less ring wear. Please feel free to voice your opinion on the choice of oil you recommend.

I would use synthetic like Mobil 1, not a synthetic blend. I ran Mobil 1 in a Volkswagen GTI, and it reduced the engine temp., the GTI had a separate gauge other than water temp.

I also ran it in a 1989 Honda CRX Si, for 150,000 miles before I sold it. The compression readings for all four cylinders were always 190 190 190 190.

I am running it exclusively in a 1995 Honda Accord EX with over 215,000 miles, and still running strong.

 

mobil 1. not syntec, not regular oil, mobil 1.
my car will never taste a drop of any other oil, and neither should yours. Whether you have a 10 year old beat up motor or a brand new rebuild, nothing beats synthetic. i would use a mobil 1 or k&n oil filter as well. you can leave them in for 5000 miles, and you can leave mobil 1 in your car for 10k no problem. I always get bored and change it before 3000, but its nice to know that i dont have to.

Seeing as how you're planning on going FI you might as well as use synthetic. Mobil 1 is certainly the most available, that's for sure.

look into ams oil. it cost more then mobil 1 but its protects better.

if u wanna go ***** to the wall u can use royal purple.....doesnt get any better than that. Mobil 1 will do great for a lot cheaper.

 

i prefer royal purple personally. its all i've used so far in my swap. pulled the valve cover recently, still just like new. thats my preference. mobil 1 is good as well.

Castrol syntec is a pseudo synthetic. It's actually made from dino oil. I'm about to put some Syntec 5w50 in my car with a very tired d15b7, we'll see how it goes. Oil with such a large viscosity range doesn't maintain the advertised viscosity as long, and is more likely to foul up earlier from what I've read.

I am no oil expert but it seems wierd to me that oil could last and protect well that long. Apparently it can and if indeed it can is the higher cost offset by the less frequent oil changes needed?

As for Mobil1 it is prob the most popular and widely available synthetic. I just use regular non-synthetic oil and change every 3000-4000 miles. Im kinda worried about switching to synthetic but Im not sure why lol

when i was in the USMC i worked as a eng mechanic on f/a-18. the oil we used came in a generic, military labeled cans. but as a case, the box itself sad mfg by mobil 1. nuff said for me

now, not the same stuff. but, if they can fiqure out how to make it work in jets, our
engs will be cake.

 

castrol is the best and someone told me its the only oil to use cause its a honda motor

Exactly. A well-maintained Honda engine running conventional motor oil will last a very long time.

 

i've been using castrol 10w30 on my EJ8 for the past 13k and its been great...cant go wrong...
