Default Do cheap catalytic coverters work?

Here in Dallas we have emission testing and the CRX I bought doesn't have a catalytic converter. I could go with a stock type or Random Technologies but they are pretty expensive. I notice a ton of cheap "Hi-Flow" cats on eBay but I wonder about their effectiveness. Anyone try one of these cheap converters and if so do they actually work??

In Ohio we have the same thing I assume you engine is stock and American? if so the "Hi Flow" should be ok. I have also heard of different E-check stations having different Calibrations so maybe try posting in your local forum. E-check is weird I am beggning to think it doesn't work because I know of people who's engines where burning oil and they still passed????

Go to Jeg's and get the high flow universal 14" cat. It's around $60. I've had no problems passing TX emissions with one.

the cheap ebay hi flow cats are nothing more than resonated test pipes by most accounts.

i think a carsound can be had for pretty cheap.

up here in BC canada, it's very difficult to pass aircare w/ a high flow, i would just look for a used oem one on the buy and sell. put it on when you go to testing, then put the test pipe back on afterards. It's probably cheaper than a new high flow too.

I don't think they calibrate them at all. I went to 2 different stations, and my ppm of NO changed by 1000!! It's total BS.

I passed TX emissions with a high-flow cat on a 1997 OBD2 car (Cavalier Z24).
Readings were right down the middle.

I would expect it to be less effective over time though... so it may be a short term (2-3 year) plan. That was my experience, anyway.
