I purchased a 89 Civic HB w/b18a1 swap in it.
Here is what happened...
Drove it around and it started smoking. Only had the car for like 5 days and drove it 2 times. Smoke is all over.
Look under the hood where the head and block meet coolant!!
I start the project of changing the HG last Thursday, Saturday night.
I replaced the timing belt, head gasket, valve cover gasket, spark plug gaskets, intake manifold gasket, exhaust gasket.
But could not find a Throttle Body gasket!!!
Luckily a fellow HTer whom is using my engine hoist happened to have a spare b18b TB gasket.
I put it on but its to small. but get it to fit
Put the intake manifold on... go to start the car 1st time!!!
Clunk clunk clunk!!!
OMG blown motor
.... nope alternator pulley hitting frame. Put a shorter belt on it. Problem solved.
Go to start it. Good.. good. smoke!! Coolant!!!
Okay its making a huge noise whistle type of sound. look around look around.
Feeling. BAM. Throttle body where it meets the intake manifold.
One of my buddies tells me to use gasket maker. I use it today. Waited about 1.5 hours and go to start it. Seems fine and then the smoke comes again!!!
Tomorrow I am ordering a new TB gasket, buying a new o2 sensor, and getting a different dizzy.. otherwise I am converting my car to an obd1 LS since I have all the parts to do it
Any ideas on what else could cause it to blow smoke? Idle is off.

The whistle could be coming from a small leak in the intake mani. This happened to me, I didn't scrape all the crap off before I put the new one on so it pushed it out just enough and let coolant come out when it heated up. If you are talking about white smoke out the exhaust, it will happen for a little while, after I rebuilt my A6 it smoked for just under 100 miles. The coolant that was getting by before is in your cat, you'll notice it get better, assuming you did it right.

Yeah I was thinking it may have got sucked up in the cat.
I will take a double look at my TB mating surface cause I don't know if it was the cleanest

Alot of times, what you are seeing as smoke is the anti-freeze that
is already in the exhaust from the previous gaskets failure..
If it runs OK and doesn't seem to be consuming oil or anti-freeze,
It may be alright...Sometimes a good, long drive allowing the
exhaust to come up to temperature is all it needs to make the smoke
disappear..

Thanks for the help. It sounds like everything was done right on my half. The only problem being the TB gasket but I plan to fix that shortly.
I also have a CKP and o2 CEL so its not running fully up to par.
Plan to fix both within the next few days.
