Default Miataboom in the full gorey detail, and 1 lap @ VIR full

I'm sure someone will complain about the format, but it's the easiest to do

I cut out the rotary comment from the Miataboom vid, cuz I got tired of people asking why I don't realize a Miata is not a rotary. Argh.

http://vertigo.weirdness.net/~wwang/wwang-miataboom.WMV

Here's one of a mostly clean lap. I blew the flat esses in this one Other than that it's an alright lap:

Enjoy,

Neat stuff. Looks like the guy in the Miata had no warning at all. I'm still looking forward to my ride-along.

Well, the weirdness machine could go away. It doesn't live at home like the rest of the weirdness machines. It's tucked away at someone's desk at an ISP.

You got any faster ones than that? I want to see you use those slicks!

I have some more from the next morning w/o a passenger, and the camera aimed a little better, but I was going slower. I think 2:21's. It was cold! Then I ran out of video for the next afternoon, which I think were my best laps.

Not sure how fast the lap I took was, but there wasn't a big helmet in the way, and it was pretty clean except for the flat esses bobble. That's pretty much my regular line at the end of the backstraight, so I didn't blow that.

What kind of brake pads do you use? It was a good lap, I hope I didn't come off like an a-hole. I would love to see some more of your footage. I get pissed watching mine because I am on street tires and I am just fighting the car the whole time. I did manage to run a 2:23 on those street tires so I was happy about that.

Hawk blues. I now have 4 track events on them. 1 Glen short and 3 VIR long. They are about halfway down.

You can't really see it in that video, but the car is definately twitchy on the tires that I'm running (look at the first braking zone where the car wants to swap ends). I run very beat up runoff tires that national level guys have thrown away. 205/50-15 Kumhos. Should be interesting when I get some bigger tires on there.

If you're running 2:23 on street tires, you are flying! I hope you have some safety equipment in there.

Thanks, I am still within limits of the tires grip though. The tires aren't consistant thats all. There are harnesses installed in the car but no roll cage yet. I did notice the front of your car dancing under heavy breaking, I got a lot of that going on too. The biggest thing is on turn 4 your car cut in sooo much better and you could get on the power so much more quicker than I can....awesome! The same goes for hog pen too, though it looked like you could have stayed on the gas a lot longer before hitting the breakes ( I saw the passenger and understand that this is not you pushing 100%). If you can't tell I like breaking down track video, hope you don't.

This is Mclaren_F1_Fan not paying attention to who is logged in BTW.

Why?

Thats not safety equipment... thats more like get your noggin crushed equipment. Hi, i'd like to keep my noodle in one peice, i should hope that you do as well. If you have a 5 point harness then your noggin will be crushed. If you have a 4 point, your internal organs will be crushed in a frontal impact (in addition to the skull mashing if you roll over). I think we've all seen these - just guess where your head is if you strapped upright with a harness:

You need to lose those harnesses. You're better off with the stock belt if you don't have a rollbar. I'm not kidding.

I actually wish groups would start checking for this. If I ran a group, it would be:

No rollbar/cage = no harnesses or r compound tires, but that's just imo.

Looked like probably a low 2:2x or so lap, maybe less (hard to tell)

Another member of the cult of nice, seamless heel-toe downshifts. Nice driving. Couple things you and I do differently (and not surprisingly, these are areas where I'm playing with different stuff):

1. Approaching Roller Coaster (14-14A I think), you bring the car left a lot sooner than I do. I stay track right, wait for the uphill, brake enough to get third, and floor it up to turn in. Which leads me to...
2. Turn in at roller coaster. MY GOD that's early. I'm gonna try that next time - looks doable.

It's almost a shame that I'm actually racing in the ECHC. I would LOVE to watch H2. You guys are all awfully damn fast.

Harnesses without a roll bar/cage is like using your head as a roll bar. Something to think about

Early left is good. Look at the track history. Those tire marks are not wholly accidental. If you turn in REAL early for the braking zone, you can use more uphill, and brake insanely hard. I bet the braking forces there are in excess of 1.3 g's or so. I even gained ground on the RX-7 and World Challenge 911 right there on the second day. You can brake HARD on the uphill if you are over to the left. Stupid hard.

Gotta throw away the entry to rollercoaster, but it's slow anyways, and one one can get by ya while you make the car all wide You can hear my poor tired kumhos screaming for dear life.

disclaimer: If you go lawnmowing trying some of this stuff, well, it's not cuz I did it. Just make sure to slow down Jon and Corey while you scare yourself to death.

Warren have you ever raced at vir full?
No, I was kinda thinking about the regional coming up, but bailed. Gotta get more stuff done before the first HC race. I'm going to try to attend the Finger Lakes region double up at the Glen, just because I feel like running the Glen, but that's a rough schedule. Race @ CMP the weekend before, and then race @ the Glen the weekend after, both doubles.

Good luck! Where did you get your roll cage and how much did it cost? I hope you don't mind me picking your brain there are a lot of questions I would like to ask you?

Oh what a coinkidink. I've been meaning to start a thread about 14 and 14a for VIR full, but since you mention it here...

Regardless of the early or traditional (orange spot) turn-in for 14, you can only enter 14a with so much speed, so...

You can brake a whole lot for 14, turn, then brake just a little in a strait line before 14a

OR

You can brake a little bit for 14 (of course you're braking as hard as possible, but not as long as in above example), take 14 like a madman, and then brake for all your car's worth in the little strait before 14a.

I guess my question is, for you folks that are waiting until after the 1 marker to brake for 14, does that mean you're doing a crazy amount of braking for 14a?

PS, Mclaren_F1_Fan, what are you piloting to achieve 2:23s at VIR full on street tires?

Erm, what's 14a? I don't know the numbers. I brake around the 1 marker, and I brake HARD. All it's got during the uphill part. If you go in too hot, and you still have to brake while you crest that hill, it starts to get very interesting. You can do it, but it's risky. You end up understeering into an early apex for the first 2 turns of rollercoaster. You'll probably scare the crap out of yourself, along with anyone around you. Don't ask me how I know that.

Say, where's Roger, ask him! He's the real speed demon

AFAIK 14 is the left at the end of the long back strait, and 14a is the immediate right into rollercoaster (edit: well not into The Rollercoaster, it's the first turn of Rollercoaster).

In the SRX-7, full throttle all the way to the 0 marker, trail brake aggressively through 14. If you trail brake effectively, there is tons of room to get slowed enough for 14a/15.

Of course, I'm also about 15mph slower than the ITRs, so don't be a dumbass and mimick everything I do.
