Massive Oil Consumption
My 2000 base has been burning oil like there's no tomorrow. I just got the car back in august with 80,000 miles on it. I switched over to Mobil 1 last month and ever since then the car has burned around two quarts of oil. Now I know the h22s tend to burn oil expecially synthetic, but 2 quarts is way too much for 1000 miles of driving. The weird thing is is that the car runs great; pulls hard through vtec, idles smooth, and doesn't smoke one bit. This weekend im going to do compression test and try to do a leak-down test but I am starting to think that the rings are shot, or something else all together.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should do? Should I switch back to conventional oil? Has anyone else experienced this after switching to synthetic?
I should add that the car did burn a little oil runnning Castrol GTX before I switched to Mobil 1.

I say run the Castrol again for awhile and see what happens. Still do the compresion and leak down test, but before you tear it apart, run the Castrol.
I've heard that it's fairly normal on the first switch over to Synthetic. I myself have just put on over 1000 miles after switching to Mobil1 and it has burned oil at a WAY faster rate then regular oil.
Try another oil cycle or two of the synthetic, and see if it's any better..

My motor has 18K on it and Ive been running Mobile1 since 9k. It will burn more oil when running Mobile1 compared to a non synthetic. I dont know why, thats just what my experience was.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm probably going to stick it out for the 3000 miles with the mobil 1 and go from there. If it still burns at the rate that it is now, a quart every week or two, then I'll switch back to castrol. As long as the car runs strong and still gets good gas mileage, 24-25 mixed driving, I'm not going to worry about it too much. I like the piece of mind that I get from synthetic when I drive the car hard so if it starts to burn less and less oil, I'll stick with the mobil 1.
You guy had any experience with other synthetics (redline, royal purple, amsoil, ect.), do they burn as much as Mobil 1?

Isnt that a little thick? Did you notice any gas mileage difference from it?

Well, I did the compression test and I came out with 180, 185, 185, 185, which is damn near perfect. I ended up switching back to the Castrol GTX 5w-30. Before I changed the oil I ran a can of Seafoam through the car, half in the intake manifold and half in the crankcase so we'll see if that makes the motor burn less oil.
Well its been about 2 weeks since I switched back to Castrol and I havent burned a drop of oil. I dont know if it was the seafoam or what but the car seem to run really well. I'm just gonna stick with the Castrol GTX and not even bother switching back to synthetic.
for conventional oil.

Well it’s been 5 months and I'm still burning oil. I'm debating weather or not to by an oil catch can. Does anyone know if the catch can will alleviative the oil consumption?
My theory is that my rings are bad and they are causing a lot of blow-by which is sending oil vapor into the intake manifold via the pcv system.
