In August while my car was being inspected the mechanic said that the CV boots were cracked, and that they would need to be replaced in a few months when I hear a clicking sound. I'm hearing that clicking sound now, how much do they cost to be replaced?

You should have changed the boots. Now you have to change cv joints too.

ur mechanic is a MEAT HEAD i cannot believe that anyone with any mechanical knowledge would advice a person to replace cracked boots when u hear a clicking sound ,,, by then it has damaged the axle and will cost more money to repair...cv boots keep grease in the joint, dirt, water and other junk out of the joint ,,they act like a glove ,,,,,,when the boot tears all the grease will be lost, axle joint will get contaminated with junk, not properly lubricated with grease and they wear , that is when u hear the clicking noise..........cv boot cost ,including clamps and grease is around 10-15 dollars .....axle is around 60-250 dollars depending where u buy it at .......you should ask him why he would give anyone such a terrible advice ..

 

can u not pass inspection if ur cv boots are cracked and u hear clicking noises? also wanted to know how long u got after u hear clicking noises.. the obvious statment would be "do it asap" but as deserthonda said, its very expensive, specially for the axles.. Mine do click, its kinda loud, and it only does it when i do sharp turns and go around 20 around a corner or turn.. if i go slow and turn wider it doesnt do it at all..

Also if u had to rate a axle and cv boot replacement , what would it be? 1 being easy 10 being hard..

I would replace the axles instead of the boots, costs more but its a better idea.

We did mine in 30 minutes, midnight at BeaveRun race track with a flashlight. I am sure you could do it faster in daylight.

 

you can replace the joint for about $95

 

if u plan on replacing the axle urself,, the hardest thing would be to remove the 36mm axle nut, aside that, of course raise the car , remove cutter pin and castle nut from lower ball joint, separate ball joint from control arm, tap out axle from the hub, swing rotor assembly to the side , pry axle out of tranny and slide it out through the wishbone,,, if u have the proper tools,,,,,,,,,,,, it is a 1 ,, piece of cake.... it is a lot cheaper if u do it yourself,, u can pick up an axle at checker or autozone for around 60-70 dollars ...

obviously the mechanic he went to was a swindler, i bet he does think you should wait until they start clicking, so he can replace both boots and axles and make twice as much money off of you. Any good mechanic would suggest replacing them if the slightest thing was wrong with them, for your safety. save yourself the headache man, i drove a car around last summer for like 2-3 weeks with that clicking noise, it only gets louder until something bad happens, and its the most annoying sound ever

 

How much effort does it take to remove that 36mm axle nut? Will a breaker bar be enough to get it off? Any other tools to help me get the job done? I have a '93 Honda Accord LX-10th Anniversary with ABS.

Most socket sets don't come with a socket that big (36mm), and it will take some effort. May need a cheater pipe besides the breaker bar.

 

it takes quite a bit. A decent breakerbar possably with a cheater pipe on it should do the trick.
I agree though that grease monkey is a lying ignorant swindler. Don't let that click get too bad. The final result is the axle falling out.

 

i got a two foot breaker bar from auto zone, i need to jump on it, but it works.

 

I'll give it a try with the breaker bar. Hopefully I'll have some luck with it.

 

I did the swap tonight. A 2 foot breaker bar was all I needed to get it off. It didn't take a lot of effort to get it off either. Overall, for the first time out, the CV replacement went pretty well. I'm very happy I did it myself. Thanks everyone for all the advice.

Now, on to the front brake rotor replacement.
