cv joints
hey i am replacing my cv joints and i heard that u can use 40 weight oil in the tranny instead of gear oil is that true or not and the car has 200k on it so should i just use 40w oil or should i ues gear oil thanks
Yes, you can use motor oil in the tranny. If you look in an older manual (90-95?), it will say you should use 10w30 (non-synth) for your tranny, but that was before they came out with Honda MTF and started suggesting it for all of their manual transmissions. I am sure 40w would be ok too, but I would tend to go with 30w so it's not too thick. In an emergency, 40w would definitely do the job.
Shifting may not be as smooth with 10w30 as with Honda MTF, but if you don't care and would rather save time and money, go ahead and use the motor oil.

Yup, Honda MTF does well with high mileage transmissions. If you have any grinds caused by bad synchros that are bugging you, you might want to give GM Syncromesh Friction Modified a try. It's expensive, but a lot of people swear by it.
