F23 NEED RINGS, sleeved engine, race pistons....
Hey whats up. I recently had a problem with the rings that were sent to me when i bought my CP pistons. A chunk of the ring broke in cylinder 1 and now i'm rebuilding AGAIN. I have a turbocharged f23 with iron sleeves (done by golden eagle), CP Pistons (8.5-1 comp), and Crower Billet Rods. The rings that were sent with my pistons were Hastings. I believe they were pre-cut. Fitted, they were right at the service limit. My question is: where should I go to find new rings at this point? I'm using the stock bore (86mm). Oh and it was the oil ring that broke. Also when I did a comp check, every cylinder was at about 220. Is that high for this application?
what? the OIL ring went? how exactly do you know that, you already tear it down? by oil ring you mean the "wavy" one on the bottom? or the bottom "hard" ring?
I used hastings on my build and didn't have a problem w/ ring breakage, however mine were also already at almost the service limit. (strange) I only had to grind 2 of them a little bit.
race engineering sells the hastings ring sets... you could get rings from anyone, just tell them it's for an 86mm bore honda

Yea I've done the tear down already and Its not actually the oil catch ring, but the one below it. I tried going to race engineering to order some more, but the website is down or something. Is there anywhere else I could grab these? Also what was your method of breaking your engine in? I've heard that I should take it easy, and then I've heard that I should beat the **** out of it.... I will probably do it on the dyno eathier way. Just wondering what your suggestion is.
Thanks B
Thanks B
funny, the site is down for me too. give them a call: (561) 533-5500 you can't order online from them anyway.
I beat the **** out of mine for break in. Monitoring EGT's & AFR's of course, and the car was previously tuned.
Why beat the **** out of it? This guy convinced me:

^^^ Excellent read for anyone interested in motor break in.
Okay so i got another problem. I talked to race engineering... there kinda ******** by the way, except for one guy. Anyway, so i talked to them and CP (very nice ppl) And no one can tell me what size rings I need. I dont have the original packaging or anything... all i know is that they were hastings, its for an f23a4 and its stock bore (86mm) Apparently the guy who ordered my pistons and rings actually got them from Race engineering and yet they cant help me out, even with the order number.
Also when the car was running, the pistons were really snug, is this why the ring broke and the car ran at a million degrees?

funny, John over there was a good help to me getting my order together.
I'm by no means an expert, but any 86mm honda piston rings should work fine, I'm surprised the person you talked to wouldn't know what rings go with the pistons they stock in-house!

what was snug? the ring gaps or the piston to wall clearance. Did you (or your engine builder) check the piston to wall clearance? If so what was the reading? Are there scuff marks on the sides of the pistons or on the sleeves? Snap some pics and put 'em up if you can.
Ran at a million degrees? You mean coolant temp or EGTs?

everyone i talk to says i need the job# of the pistons I had made... apparently the 86mm isnt good enough... i'm not sure where to go here....... everything visually is fine with the pistons and walls...... however that i believe was the problem the EGT was very high... to the point where it was melting my f- in bumper......
