Default How to find out the year of JDM motor?

I've been going over this info for a while, I'm trying to verify that the '1' under my stamp is the year within the gen of the motor.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=566305

I know its small but its a B18c, then a 1 as the first # under it.

But i also found this stamp, is this the year it was made or what? For those of you who cant see it, it says '93' and it was found a little farther down than the B18c stamp

Basically i requested a 97' JDM b18c. From what you guys are saying, I've been sold a 94' block with a 97' head. I've emailed hmotorsonline.com and some other guys who work on acuras for answers but i would like to ask you guys what you think.

I was told by the shop guy that all of the Gs-R motors they get are stamped with a 1 and the ITR's are stamped with a 2. I read that thread before hand but everything seemed legit. The front clip had been marked 97 SiR-G and had a small japanese sticker i happened to find that stated it had about 60k miles on it.

Ok, so to my question part.

1) Is there any way this method of checking the block can be verified?! Meaning do any of you guys happen to have written proof that you could post on this site or fax me?

2) Will the B.A.R. know enough to fail me if this block is a 94 and my car is a 97?

3) I bought all my new stuff ( oil pump, thermostat, water pump ) so wouldnt i have had an issue with one of those parts (the oil pump i know for sure has a different part # between 95 and 97 on USDM)?

4) Could the method for checking the year of the motor be flawed for the JDM's? I know it works for USDM because i checked my y8 with it and it came out perfect.

Thanks for reading this, i want to make sure i didnt get screwed and to stop anyone else from trying to order legit parts getting screwed

i cant help you, however; i can tell that it will NOT pass bar with the 93 block. Unless they look real hard they wont tell and you'll be ok.

Well if the B.A.R. knows how to read block years i know SOMEONE else out there can.

Becides, if B.A.R. can tell and doesnt give me a sticker because of the year, ill just sue the shop that sold it to me.

it is marked on the head just on top of the heatsheld it is in a circle.
you should see a 96 97 98 99 00 01 etc.

As long as you stay obd2, i really don't think they'll catch it, even if it is a 94 block.

That is the head. The problem is the block. All indications ( how it looks, how the front clip looked, the markings on it from the salvage yard, the head, the mileage on the front clip, how new the timing belt looked ) point to it being a 97' block, but there's that thing about the block year being under then stamp....

I'm just trying to piece this all together

That is correct the stamps are located in the circles, i modifed ur pic to show u where to look right above the red in the picture, the stamps are just above the exhaust manifold, only one number will make sense as to what year it is. if its a 93 motor it will look like this 9|3 with a circle around it.

As long as the block is the same as the head i dont think youll have a problem. But that 1 does mean its a 94 from what i understand on how to read them.

I think the BAR is more against LS/VTEC, B18/B16, and so forth. As long as you have all the sensors correct for the block you should be fine i would hope.

When you get BAR'd let us know what happens.

if ur block and head have never been apart, then that is the year of the motor or actually the year it was made which means it usually ended up in the next year up car

my daily driver has a 98 LS swap that i presonally know is from a 98. In that same spot where ur says 93, mine says 95, so I dont know if that has anything to do with the year maybe thats the year that the blocks casting was designed, but as far as i know the way they check the year is by the head and looking at the style plugs u have on ur dist and injectors. The REF who BAR'ed my 94 GSR motor told me the same thing i told u, that he found the year by looking at those numbers stamped on the head. So i don't think u should have an issue with that portion.

ok just to help u out, here is my 94 GSR swap, head and block have never been apart. I have the same "1 - 0" & "93" stamped on the lower block as u do, my serial number begins with "1" like urs but my head has a "9|3" my clip was a 94 JDM GSR, so like I said I think that 93 on the lower block denotes that this block was from the 93 casting or something like that but in either case i don't think that lower block number has anything to do with the year the motor was made.

Head Stamp

Engine Block # Stamp

Lower Block Stamp

Yeah, i think that Honda Japan may be making these blocks in advance, whereas Honda US may just make what they need and nothing else. The guy who owns the shop said all his B18c have a 1 and all his B18c5's have a 2.

I know i've said this before but, the car was marked 97' Si-Rg by a wrecking co. ( I could tell by the way the writing was with that chalk they normally use and it was worn like it had been on the car for a while ), It has a 97' head on it, it was the whole front clip that had a tiny Japanese sticker that had 107k km and the car looked new.

I also have another question, are there any interior changes from 95 to 97 in the acuras? Meaning, if i look at that clip again and its dash panel, is there any clues as to what year it came from?

You know, the thing that gets me is, if the block # thing works for all hondas, why havent any honda dealers, techs, Helms manuals or anyone except for a few select people on the internet found out about this?

K, so i went to go see the front clip again. It had that blue japanese stamp on it that said E-DB8-(# from the block). I think the block stamp is the same stamp they put all over the car because i saw those same #'s twice. Once on the blue stamp and again across the back of the engine bay

I have a S80 tranny if that helps at all....
