96 accord idling problem?
hi.kinda new to this place.i recently acquired a '96 honda accord,i think thew engine model is f22... the problem is that my idling is not stable, sometime when i'm driving and i get to a stop, the idling drops, sometimes it doesn't,just picks itself back up.
my friend told me it was the "idle up" device location at the rear of the intake i think, so we replaced that with another one which, although 2nd hand, worked fine at the beginning,i was very pleased with what happened.
but then, after a few weeks time, the idling starts playing around again....any ideas how i should fix that?i mean, what's the idle up for?how does it work?is it really cause my idle up device is clogged up or dirty or whatever?or is there something else to it?
hope you guys would help me out here...i don't know anything about cars that much yet...
byt the way, the accord is '96 model automatic transmission.

Not to totally bum you out...I've been trying to find the cause of my bad idle for months. It can be caused by at least ten different, simple factors...dirty/bad iacv/ficv, bad plug wires, spark plugs, dizzy problems, timing belt being off a tooth, the list can go on and on. I'd recommend a professional diagnosis if the first few inexpensive fixes don't work.
I have a 94 accord ex and i had the same problem. I don't know if you have vtec or if it makes a difference in the valve, but the solution to my problem was to pull of the IAC motor and clean it out with carb and choke cleaner only. brake parts cleaner or any other solvent won't work. it fixes the unstable idle problem for abou t 6 months. and then it starts again, but that is better than a $225 IAC motor. good luck
Also, the IAC valve will hunt if the idle screw has been backed out too far. Unplug the IAC, set the idle to between 500 and 600 RPM, plug it back in and clear your code. The FITV can also cause this problem. It has a donut with a thimble in the middle that controls air bleed. Sometimes the dunut gets loose and can be screwed back down so that it seats properly. Brake parts cleaner will work as long as it is methylene chloride based like Gumout. Choke cleaner is methylene chloride based.
for real, number one thing on forums...IF YOU DON"T TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE WE CAN"T HELP YOU!!!
The fact that its an F22 doesn't mean jack, all I-4 accords are f series. For starters is it an EX (vtec), LX, or DX?
Check for vaccuum leaks too.

Beginning in 1996 there's no FITV. It was incorporated into the IACV. Trim often means a different engine, say F22A1 vs F22A{whatever}. Different possible vacuum leak locations, etc...
He gave his year in his post. My reply concerning the FITV was for the benefit of pbink and steved108 who have experienced similar problems on earlier models. Schmitey was being facetious. He's not going to have anything else to offer if he does know the trim level. If he does, let him list the different advice he might give depending on each trim. Maybe you would like to list the different advice you might give this particular guy depending on his trim package.
hi everyone. thanks for the advices and the nags...firstly,i'm sorry if i wasn't able to post certain information about the car...i don't really know this stuff, all i know is that it's a 96accord,VTEC
, and it has PH22 engine, which i found out from a friend, that it's actually an F22 (SOHC), but with a P22 block...well, at least that's what i remember him saying...
amckee, thanks for the info...i tried unplugging the socket for the iac valve, to try and adjust my idle settings as you said, but then the engine dies when i unplug the valve... what should i be doing next?is that normal?if so,then how could i unplug the valve and then adjust the idling settings?

The idle screw is either too far in or the passage is plugged. Try unscrewing it a few turns first. If that doesn't allow it to idle, remove the screw and spray choke cleaner through it with the little straw that comes with the can. Once the idle is set, you may have to put a dab of silicone on the head of the screw to keep it from vibrating in or out.
