Default replaced head gasket... still smokin

ok so my car's exhaust was a white smoke, which is coolant so I replaced my head gasket, and while the head was off I checked for a crack in the sleeve. I did this by running my finger around the inside cylinder wall. I did not feel any cracks so i put the new headgasket on and put everytnig back together. I statred up my car and still white smoke.

Could the crack in the sleeve be so small i could not feel it or is there something other than a cracked sleeve or blown head gasket that would cause white smoke.

Also one thing i did not check was a warped block or head, but my engine has never over heated and ran good for the past year.

were you able to check the cylinder head for cracks? coolant pressure test can reveal where you have leaks, are you loosing coolant? whats compression like?

no I didnt check the head for cracks, I did notice a little loss of coolant, but I did not drive my car more than a mile after it started smoking. I am going to check my compression this friday because i am away at school.

do that and coolant pressure check.

coolant pressure test kits should be available at most auto stores, or dealer/shop should be able to get one done for 30-40 bucks, you just have to make sure pressure doesn't go past the point specified inside service manual. you'll be able to hear the leak if there is one.

i say it's one of ur rings......do a compression test.....make sure the number are close across the board......if not time for piston upgrades

check your intake manifold for cracks or leaks?

Why would rings cause white smoke? If it was the rings surely it would be blue, ie oil.

coolant runs in the manifold, the gasket could be bad and leaking. or there could be a crack causing it to leak.

when i had blowby due to bad ring seal, the smoke was white.. it wasn't exactly burning at that point, at least most of it wasn't

first pull out your glasses and double check the color of the smoke. then do a compression test. how much is it smoking? you have to have quite a bit of coolant in the system for the smoke to be really white. that would mean you would go through coolant more than "a little". thin blue smoke can sometimes look white, depending on the lighting

also when is it smoking? while u are on the gas? or coasting/when letting off the gas?

compression test... could be your rings... if it still persists.. try switching to a thicker oil.

oh oh, i've got one, what does it smell like.? sweet, maybe, maybe not. if sweet then coolant, but you know you don't have a coolant leak. and just for future reference if your car sits a while at the house while you're getting edumacated then the h2o in the coolant will evaporate. damn physics.

no i didnt resurface the head, but it has never over heated. I am going to do a compression test and leakdown test this weekend. Also when it was idling i noticed the header runner off the number 3 cylinder was significatly cooler (i could touch it for longer) than the rest. I have a hondata IM gasket in my room, i was going to do it at the same time but ran in to time issues, so i will probably do that aswell as looking for cracks in the IM this weekend. thanks for the help

i did a cmpression test and everything came back good, but a guy on another forum said his block was warped and burned coolant but his compression was fine, is this possible, i dont see how coolant could leak in and air not leak out.

I am now thinking its the IM because the number 3 runner in the manilfold is noticably cleaner whereas the rest have more carbon build up. any way to test this or could i find this out with a leakdown test?

I searched a ton and found no real facts about what may happen to a B18C1 after a severely blown head gasket.

I am writing up MY experience for anyone doing the same search I did.

My car took well over 11 hrs of drive time to STOP smoking intermittently after I replaced the MLS head gasket.

It took 4 oil changes in that 11 hrs for me to feel comfortable that the oil wasn’t getting prematurely contaminated from mixing with the coolant and getting that milky stuff on my cap and on my valve cover and catch can hoses.

I noticed my oil pressure go over 100psi when there is a mix of coolant with the oil.

my next post will be some photos for proof.

As you can see, there is a chip on the head where the gasket blew.

I don’t know for sure if it chipped when it blew, or it blew because it was already chipped.

I put jb weld on the chip before putting the motor back together.

I straight edged the head and the block, it was within spec.

I did NOT use copper spray as per JE Pro Seal MLS recommendation. Some MLS brands ask for it, but I didn’t use it based on JE recommendation.

I replaced my plugs 3 times since the head gasket blew in the <300 miles of 11 hrs of drive time.

Photos putting motor back together

Again, after using a straight edge and confirming specs and making sure there were no cracks, I put it back together.
