Looking for TDC on #1
Want to check my timing. The Haynes manual I got sucks, doesn't even show #1 cylinder anywhere. They talk about a timing alignment mark opening onthe bell housing and show a picture of it, but I can't find it on my engine/tanny combo. The distributor cap isn't marked. The plug wires have a 1,2,3,4 marked on them with the 1 wire going out to the plug closest to the camshaft sprocket, and that is how I set up my timing marks with that cylinder at TDC, after changing the timing belt. In the manuel it tells how one should mark inside the distributor where TDC of #1 is, looking at the picture of where the rotor is pointed it is 180 out of where my rotor is pointed. This frigging book sucks, it looks like they only took pictures of a VTEC engine, it is not what I have in my Civic. I did line up the crankshaft alignment mark, but I did line up the camshaft marks with that cylinder at the top of the stroke with the rotor positioned to fire at the cylinder's plug wire, maybe during the timing belt tensioning I ended up being the equivlant of one tooth off. What really sucks is before I put everything back together, I started it up for a couple seconds to make sure the engine wasn't damaged when the timing belt broke, and it did run. Can't wait to hear Dick's opinion on this post.
#1 cylinder is closest to timing belt, then #2, then #3, then #4 closest to distributor - firing order is 1-3-4-2 - #1 spark plug wire on distributor cap is at bottom - #3 is closest to firewall - #4 is at top - #2 is closest to front of car
ok well all u have to do is take an extention and put it in the cyl that is closest to ur cam gear. then take ur hand and if u have any muscles u can ratate the crank pully by hand then when the extentions all the way at the top stop and rotate back then get it percect. and the cam gear should b like level with the top of the motor

Just tried it again, and really didn't change any of the setup, and low and behold it started, however I could just berly keep it running by fluttering the gas pedal. After about 30 sec though it smoothed right out and seems to be ok except one problem now. No power on the end of the RPM. I'll go up a hill and it really bogs down as the tranny down shifts through the gears. Right from when I first bought the car there was a very noticable horsepower increase when a certain RPM was reached. Will I did remeber reading a post where someone changed a timing belt and experienced the same problem I now have. So it is off to the previous posts. At least its running with out any apparent engine damage from the timing belt break.
