MORE UPDATES BELOW
my friend just recently bought a 98 gsr (im posting it here because the integra section moves too slow) knowing that vtec didnt work.
now here's what we've tried
1. changed the oil with mobil 1 synthetic /new oem honda filter
2. replaced the vtec solenoid with a brand new one from acura
3. checked the oil pan, no dents (block seems to have never been taken out)
4. checked the ecu, same one that came with the car, swapped it out anyways with mines from gsr, same problem
5. took it out for a spin at normal temps and correct speed, still no vtec
6. checked the vss, not broken, speedo works fine
7. replaced oil pump, water pump
9. checked engine wire harness, same oem the car came with, no cuts, plugs are still good
10. checked for pins in the head, still there.
now, the previous owner said he did take off the head because he replaced a bad valve. he said that vtec was fine before that.
and yeah ive searched, the best thread was this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=164863
thx in advanced
UPDATE 11.28.05: we did a vtec switch and vtec does kick in (so we know nothings wrong with oil pressure, the head, etc) we're looking at the wire harness right now, but we're waiting on getting a new gsr harness to see if that'll work
UPDATE--2.08.06 well, we ended up swapping a new 1998 gsr motor into the dc2 chasis and VTEC still doesnt WORK. we figure its the wire harness again so we linked the wires for vtec (vtec sol and vtec pressure) straight to the ecu like a car that never came with vtec, still no VTEC. we swapped ecu again with a working one, still nothing. so we're out of ideas. i mean is there a fuse or something for vtec that just died or what.
on another note, when we unplugged the vtec pressure, the CEL came on, but when we unplugged teh vtec sol, NO CEL. so any help more would be awesome
cliff notes:
-old motor was ripped out
-new motor was installed
-still no vtec
-tried 3 different working ecu--still no vtec
-tried linking direct wires from vtec sol/vtec oil pressure to ecu--no vtec
-tried linking to switch--YAY I GOT VTEC
-but i dont want to run with a ghetto switch
any more ideas, the new motor is perfect with only 55k bought from a friend
UPDATE BELOW-2.28.06
-i tried a vtec light with everything just running from the ecu--it WORKS @ 4400 rpm
-now i think im ive been a fool all this time-i wasnt aware (even after having 4 gsr motors) that vtec kicks in @ 4400 and the IAB's kicked in @ 5700 rpm on a gsr motor (i had a sk2 on my last buildup)
-so my problem does not lie in the vtec, but with the IAB's not working properly
-with that being said, people say that the trick to seeing if the IAB's works or not is to see it IAB actually close when you start the car (its open when its off). now when i did that, it didnt do anything. its like the IAB was stuck, now if i take off the vacuum line when the car is on, then IAB opens(actually moves, so i know its not opening when the car is off) i think this is where my problem lies
any ideas on this
color=red] 3.03.06[/color]
finally got it to work properly, the 2 vacuums (#12 and #13) were hooked up wrong under the IM but hooked up right to the proper places (FPR and IAB) so i never wouldve guessed. but i tried it and it worked. thanks for everything, after spending $2000 for new things and a new motor, i finally have things working for once

dam u wasted a lot of money on all those newparts. ask the original owner is that the same herad that came with the car or did he buy it off some one maybe the plugged the oil jet for lsvtec happened to me. and check the screw slash bolt on the corner of the head above the water neck and see if there is oil pressure while the car is running

yeah, i figure there might not be enought oil pressure, but i dont have an oil pressure tester.
also its the same head that came with the car. and im unsure about the screw slash bolt, do you have pix of it

yeah we'll go check timing then if that don't work then we don't know whats wrong..

car starts up fine, idles fine, drives fine just like an ls, and is able to rev to 8200k. just that there's no vtec. the car has a 5zigen catback and intake so im sure if its there, we should be able to hear it.

actually its suppose to be an OBD2A p72, not p73 (thats a type r) and yes, its a obd2a p72, we even switched it out with mines from my gsr

My friend has a del sol and swapped his z6 for a b16. My other friend got his z6 and installed it in a cx hatch. The vtec worked fine in the delsol. Now that he swapped the z6 in the hatch he has no vtec. He changed the solinoid, oil, ecu, checked all the electrical you name it. He is a certified "dodge" mechanic so has pretty good car knowledge. But we can't figure out the problem. He has a chipped uberdata P28 and installed it in my friends vtec and it ran fine. He can take it to redline but without any vtec. If I left anything out let me know and I'll try my best to answer
I can't remember the name of the piece, but they are installed in the rockers....check if that's there. If they are not there, vtec won't work but the car will still drive fine. ALso, check for the o-ring and dowel in the middle cam cap
I would suggest what everyone else suggested but it seems that its something other than that. Good luck with finding the problem post the solution when you do.
It's tuff because we have went through everything 2-3 times and swapped out the parts etc. It's the fact that it went out of one car and into another like that and now nothing.. Just puzzled
are you talking about lma's(lost motion assemblies)?
im with the oil pick up if it has been beat on oil could be clogging the pick up . run some sea foam clean the pick up , and check the lma's like paul is talkign about
