Default obd1 gsr motor into obd2 gsr - can i smog it?

*searched*

i found a good deal on a 2000 gsr shell. i know my motor will work and i can just use a obd2 -> obd1 conversion harness, but will it smog? technically i'm supposed to update the motor to obd2, but that's a pain in the *** right? what are my options? does anyone have a link for exactly what needs to be done to update my motor to obd2 if i decide to go that route? if i use the conversion harness will that be an automatic fail at a smog station? will they even notice or care? thanks in advance!

just leave it and run the harness. no one in SLO would even know, well if they were really looking at the hood label, maybe. but if you wanted to go OBD2, you would need OBD2 ecu, oil pump with crank angle sensor, secondary O2, wire in the crank angle or run OBD2 engine harness and OBD2 distributor. oh ya, and a OBD2 intake manifold and throttle body thats IF you had to go to the ref. i hope i'm not forgetting anything. hope this helps.

according to the ref (at cuesta), it doesnt matter what year the engine is because the B18C was from 94-00. so in order run the motor as a OBD1 you would need ALL OBD1 smog equipment, the same goes for OBD2. also same goes for JDM motors.

so in your case IF you wanted to run OBD2 you would need all OBD2 smog equipment.

thanks! so i guess the crank angle sensor/etc counts as emissions equipment? i talked to the ref at cuesta and he said that if i dropped the motor into an obd2 car i would have to update it. so i guess my real question is "can i GET AWAY WITH leaving it obd1 in an obd2 car?" is it standard procedure for smog guys to read the computer? because i know that technically i won't have to ref the car because it's a gsr motor going into a gsr. if i roll into a smog station will it smog just like a normal car and that will be that? what if i sell it like that?

the crank angle doenst count as smog equipment, but you would need it to convert to obd2. i'd think you probably get away with it in slo. smog tech's dont look at the ecu before the smog. just as long as everything looks stock under the hood, its all good. SOME smog techs wont smog if you have intake and /or headers. as for selling it, you better let the seller knwo what they are buying.

i see. i don't need the sensor for smog, but without it i'd have a cel, which is an auto-fail. cool, well thanks for the help! i guess i might be re-incarnating my gsr after all.
