2nd Gear Slipping!!
Hey everyone,
Ok, so the deal is i checked my tranny fluid about a month ago and it was pitch black so i decide to change the fluid. I changed the fluid with honda spec. fluid from autozone (not honda genuine ATF) the tranny was shifting like butter at the beginning, but for some reason it started to slip on second gear
. If i drive the car for a while and the tranny heats up good, it shift perfect all gears. I drive a 98 accord auto trans. with 65k mile on the tranny. Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I will not be a lot of help but, you always want to use Genuine Honda Fluid. Before you changed the tranny fluid how long ago was it you changed it? These cars already have a crap trannies. I would fo flush it out and put in Honda fluid before you do anything else.
You were in the correct church, but you didn't sit in the peu long enough.
IE: You had the right idea, but should have used Honda ATF.
Don't feel bad, it sometimes takes more than one re-do to straighten it out. It's all to do with the Fluid breaking down over the course of time allowing varnishes to form. If they form in either the Primary or secondary Valve Bodies, it can screw up a transmission to the point that it won't shift out of First (1st) until warm. The spool valves stick in their bores, and sent contradictory pressures to the different clutches and such.
If you can find a shop with a BG Flush Machine, go that route but insist on using Honda ATF on the refill. If there's no-one with a machine, try a second trans drain & Flush.

Check with the dealership for recalls on your particular vehicle. I remember hearing about a recall due to tranny's in the 6th gens.

That made me laugh!
But seriously it was NOT a recall. There is a "Service Bulletin" For the 00-02 accords and the warranty was extended to 100,000. It is possible if his Tranny does go bad he might be able to get Honda to pay for half. I highly doubt this is one of those cases, It does not sound like he gets the fluid changed very often. To get Honda to pay for half he would need to prove that he very meticulously maintained his transmission.

I believe Honda had an issue with 2001 and some late 2000 Accord l4 Automatics. Some people call it a recall, but in effect it's an extension to the Automatic Transmissions' WARRANTY COVERAGE (and ONLY the Automatic Transmission) to 100,000 miles.
Letters were sent to owners of record about 2.5 to 3 years ago.
The transmission in question is a '98

Yea i drive a 98 accord, I've done 2 drain and refills in the past 2months first with generic brand Honda spec atf from autozone and the second with amsoil atf (z-spec also) which cost me $35 for 3qts! the drain and refills aren't getting all the tranny fluid out also, cause im only adding 2-3 qts on the refill.
So you guys suggest i get a flush done from a mechanic shop and buy 5qts from Honda another $80
?
And if so, what well know places do you guys recommend, Macco?
Thank 4 da help

The first time it was changed, was there any particulate matter that drained along with the fluid??
Why second? b'cuz it's after First and before Second? No, because it may be affecting only that spool valve that controls 2nd gear apply.
The reason we go to fluid changes / flushes is that it works on most occasions, and if it doesn't; it requires a more professional eye be brought into the mix.
Check out the illustration I've provided. I count 5 computer controlled solenoids and God knows what else just in this one Parts Illustration.

Dexron-Mercon works as well, i have used both honda atf and dexron-mercron, and i see no big differences, its cheaper as well, altho most, if not all of u will disagree, IT DOES WORK! and it is specified for honda use on the label as well as in my Haynes manual
Update.....
Got my tranny flushed with Honda oem fluid atf, i most admit it changes into gears with more power and seems to shift nice. 2ND gear got better... a little still slips one a while
but with less of a whine.
Picked up the Lucas trans-fix from autozone but im debating about it... don't know

i have a 99 accord i had to get my tranny rebuilt for the 2nd gear not switching and its acting up on me again. i just wanna convert it to a 5-speed the auto tranny's suck for the 6th gen accord
yea... cottmans transmission told me that was the year they experimented with a different transmission company, something~fuji. From what we see the company sucked big time

I have an 03V6 auto. Just made my first fluid change at 30,000 miles. There was very little on the magnet, and the fluid was still red. Maybe this is overkill, maybe it's not. I will keep changing it every 30,000 miles. Only using Honda ATF Z1. This way if I have transmission problems later on, I will know I did everything I could to prevent it. When and if they ever have to do a repair on this sucker. They will see nothing but clean Honda fluid in it. Heck, its was only 3 quarts at $3.99. Plus tax it's still less than $15.00. Pretty cheap insurance in my opinion. Why people take a chance on other brand fluids is beyond me.
