Default Screwing around with new jig

I was bored at work the one day so I made myself a jig to cut collector tubes. I only had enough material aorund to do 2 runners so this is all I came up with. The fact that the blade on the bandsaw bit the dust while I was also doing this (leaving me to finish with a cutoff wheel) sucked as well. Oh well, it was only to mess around anyway.

Here's what I managed to make:

The pipes are cut at a 15* angle. The outer weld I did using the pull method for the first time and it came out ok I suppose. I was using 1/16 308 filler though and think it probably would have been easier with .045" rod so I could use less heat. The inner portion of what would be the collector I finished the weld with the push method but the heat was too high, bead too wide, and it showed in the dull grey color. The sugar was unavoidable as I wasn't backpurging, but that's a given.

Any critiques are welcome.

looks good, but you need to decrease the heat, increase the filler rod, and maybe speed up a little bit to get rid of the sugaring.

By pulling, I mean that I would have the torch pointed at the part already welded and work away from it, left to right. Pushing would make you point the torch more in the direction of what needs to be welded, making you weld right to left. (assuming the welder is right handed and the torch is in the right hand) If that doesn't make sense, I'll try to explain differently.

Looks good Brent. For some reason I think you'll be ditching that 2g manifold on the next incarnation of your car

Tomayto, Tomahto Thanks for correcting me on that backhand and forehand though.

Mostly everything else I weld is forehand but as the thread topic says, I was just screwing around so I figured I'd try some new things. The gas coverage seemed to work out slightly better that way though.

Joe, that 2g manifold is loooong gone. You know I'll be making my own for the next build up.

I actually work over in New Jersey in Blairstown at a car parts store but we do service and fabrication a little as well. That's where my equipment is anyway.

Useless fact: Portions of Friday the 13th, pt. 1, was filmed in/around that town.
