Default GAS PROBLEM!!!

for some reason my 92 dx hatchback eats up alot of gas. i have no check engine light on. i filled up yesterday and i don't drive anywhere except to school and back home and now i am at lil above half, then it sometimes goes up a lil more. my cluster could be inaccurate, but i don't know. the gas needle goes up and down alot. does anyone know what would cause my hatch to eat up alot of gas?

Well a good tune up should be first on the list if it hasn't been done in a long time. Parts consist for a minor tune up:
-New spark plugs (get some NGK V-power. There cheap and work great ) Spark plug wires, Cap and Rotor, Fuel filter, PCV, etc.

If your engine runs fine (not rough) and these parts have been replaced within the last year then you have other problems. Make note, only go out and buy parts if you can rule out any other factors that would be hurting your gas mileage. First thing would be to get the old voltmeter out. Check your manual and follow along and check your O2 sensor. Are you running rich? Next time when you tank up, tank up, clear tripometer, next time fill up and record amount of gas added and mileage on tripometer. Do a little math and you'll know what MPG your getting. Just check the O2 sensor and do any necessary maintenance and see if that helps.

Some people don't understand it but the PCV valve plays a bigger role in engine life and performance than most people think.

you mention that your fuel guages is all over the place. I would go fill up and see how much it takes. If it only takes a few liters then I assume it something either with your guages or your sending unit. If it takes more like a half tank then I would wonder more along the lines of something else obviously. But if you going through a half tank in just a day without driving much, i wonder how well its running since if its that rich i would expect to see some poor running conditions. IE. poor idle, excell, etc.

Are you calculating your mpg or are you just going by the gauge?

Same thing happens in my buddys hatch. We jock him because he claims he can't do anything because his gauge reads empty yet after a little 'peer pressure' he seems to be able to drive 40mile round trips.

try calculating your gas mileage.

IE i have a d16za which gets about 27/30mpg, so doing the math with a 10/11 gallon tank i should reach somewhere around 300miles before i need to gas up.

calculate your gas milage, and if you find you have to keep gassing up while driving less and less miles then you have a problem.
