Default Battery in the trunk....

Not sure if this is better asked in the auto-x forum, but who here has thier battery in the trunk of the prelude...

Which box did you use, are there any down-sides to the install (aside from loss of trunk space), and how much of an improvement did you feel as far as the overall handling?

thanks in advance.

I've done it before, just not in my prelude.

I fabricated one out of a sheet of aluminium...

trunk space isn't a bother, but you have to make sure nothing touches the battery leads or you could end up shorting the battery. Also, having to run wires all the way back to the trunk is a PITA. And it makes jump-starting weird. And ricers will look under your hood and go "huh?"

you're kidding, right? it's about 20 lbs. you're not gonna notice. if you do, it's all psychosomatic. The only real reason to relocate a battery is for safety purposes, weight transfer on a full race car, or to meet IHRA/NHRA/SCCA/etc. rules.

I relocated mine but didn't use a a full battery box because I wasn't auto-xing the prelude or anything... I had to move mine to make room for charge piping...

So if you gain 20lbs you can tell the difference in your prelude?
I call bullshit

SamIAm - that looks damn good. Very good man. Clean.

For auto-x at least, you actually don't need a battery box.

And depending on what sort of battery you have, it can be alot more than 20 lbs. Either way, depending on what you do with your car, it definitely can make a BIG difference in the way the car handles. It did on mine.

I second that...

20lbs = 2.5 gallons of fuel...

If it didnt make a difference, people wouldnt do it, plain and simple.

I am asking to what degree it makes a handling difference.

Ok, I misunderstood. Unless you're running a stripped-down, 1800lb race car, you won't notice it at all. Better?

i have done this, and you will not notice anything at all! i did it to make a air duct from the headlight to the intake filter. BTW i did this on a 90 accord, and it was lighter than a prelude, and should therefor make a bigger difference in weight/handling.

I have done this, put the Battery in the same place as Sam1am, but i bought my battery box and all my materials from Advanced for less than 50 bux

Although there was no performance/handling differances, it cleaned up the engine bay and made some room for some future charge pipes.

yeah guys i really would recommend runing a vented sealed battery box. unless your running a completely sealed battery, ie you can't pop the covers to add water..

batterys release harmful fuems... do it to be safe!

most auto-stores should sell a battery box of some sort, i recently bought a plastic one - that looks similar to the summitt racing plastic box - it cost me 12 dollars CAN, has a lil vent (altho i plan on running a yellow top optima) and a place for the leads to extend...

if you go into some places just ask for a battery box for a boat... it should be fully sheltered (;

Don't burn me for this but does speaker vibration affect the battery in the rear to the point it becomes a problem?

how could speaker vibration become a problem when revving your engine to redline will cause 100x more vibration than a speaker would...not to mention that you hit bumps in the road EVERY TIME you drive...so i would say that your concern is a non-issue.

Not many people relocate the battery in a Prelude.

It might take small change off your time in autox, which is cool, but it will bump you out of stock class for sure (if you're concerned about that). Also, you're going to have to use a fat coil of power wire - like probably 15 feet to get to your alternator - so the whole system will be heavier than stock.

It would be neat to do, but it may not be worth money.

Its not as expensive as you think. I just used jumper cables and cut the ends off, they were like $10, and same gauge as the heavy **** that you buy for like $5 a foot... Anyways, it was necessary for me for charge piping, same as sam1am

Well it only cost me less than $10 and I had to for my turbo setup... Every little bit of weight distribution counts...

Well I grounded mine to the rear passenger side tow hook underneath the car because there is a whole right near it that goes into the trunk if you remove a plug... And also a small ground to the bracket the holds the jack because I reused the stock negative cable which has a big wire and a small wire... I have a picture on my home computer but I guess I never uploaded it to we-todd... I'll upload it later if anyone cares...
