PLEASE HELP!! ?Water pump / Timing Belt? ( stock 1989 hatch )
once you have the cover off, it's like 3 or 4 bolts that hold it on. I think you'd need to have the Timing belt loose, if not Off, I don't remember.
If it's anything like the A6, here's how to do it. Take the t-belt cover off, which will probably require you to remove the crank pulley bolt (pain in the *** without an impact gun). Remove the timing belt from the water pump pulley, you don't want to take it off because it goes through the motor mount, but you also want to keep it clean. Drain the coolant, I think there is a drain on the block as well as the radiator, but I'm not sure. I did mine while I had the motor apart so it was already drained. Anyway, expect a mess of coolant when you do remove it. There are 5 bolts holding the pump on, one of them is shared with the alternator mount. Now you can just pull it off. The new water pump should come with a seal, if it doesn't I would definitely get a new one (you'll see what I mean). Basically now you just put the new one on and put it all back together. make sure to bleed the coolant and stuff before you run the car if you don't want idle surge. By the way, I left my lower t-belt cover off, and my car has been fine. When I first removed it, it was clean on the outside but filthy inside, getting grease all over the belt. I figure it's just keeping crap inside and not keeping anything out. Also it makes maintenance a lot easier if it's not there, and it's a real pain in the *** to get the lower part back on the engine.
Do the job tomorrow, start spraying the bolt with PB Blaster every hour until then. I like to heat it with a torch and then spray it, when it cools it sucks the stuff in. Also get a big breaker bar, I use the handle off my 2 ton jack since it's solid and long. Make sure the extensions on your ratchet are straight too, either get someone to hold them or use a jack stand.
