Turboing a Type R
Im tossing up either getting a lancer evo 8 or integra type r. i like the lancer better but i have always wanted a type r turboed. first off basically id like to know how reliable a type r would be with like a rev hard turbo kit for daily driving. i dont want to blow my motor by turboing it so im trying to hear what you guys have to say. please let me know what u think and let me know what else i need to get to make it run right clutch, exhaust, fuel pump etc. thanks.
factory turbo will always be more reliable then an after market turbo set up, just remember that. i personally would go for the evo, newer, and you wouldn't have to do so much right off the bat for it to meet your needs,
im shooting for the evo like u said since its already turbo but my first loves always been a honda, basically if i find that it is half reliable to run a type r turboed id buy one.

Figure it out yourself. We don't know your goals, wants, needs and funds. Prepare yourself for an empty wallet and migrains if you go the turbo ITR route.

Are you planning on turboing the Type R with the stock bottom end? If so, you might as well get the EVO. You're really comparing apples and oranges here. If you really wanted detailed advice, give us an idea of what you want and/or your goals for either car would be, and what kind of $$$ you have to work with.

I would say turbo the ITR, if you were planning on lowering compression. High compression+turbo= suicide!!! But I like the way the evo looks, But was extremely dissapointed in the reviews. It is almost certain that you will have to rebuild the tranny's. Mitsubishi just hasnt worked out the "kinks" in their motors yet. Go with the Honda, you wont be dissapointed. $850 at best to build bottom end for turbo and then i would go with a full race kit+ Garret gt series turbo...Good stuff
i've been doing some search on this, and there quite a few on these boards that are running boost on there stock itr, and they are daily's.
hopefully these guys can shed some light on this matter, but in the end it all matters on what you want to do. but i've read one guy's web page and he's had his boosted on stock internals and just got a hondata and been running for like 2 years now. can't remember the guy's name though.

Typical three blind mice syndrome on HT.com....
It IS true that the margin of error dimishes as you put high comp and boost together but it DOES NOT mean = suicide.
This is a perfect example of it running well:

You don't just slap on a Turbo even on "LOW" comp and expect it to run....
Decide on your own what you want to do.....

be ready to get flammed on this one, everyone says a turbo type R is a waste.
if you do it right you will have a fast *** car, built it and spend the $$$$.
i drove my turbo R for about 6 months non dyno tuned with a mild street tuned, hung with mid 13 sec cars,
car started to burn oil, bad.... then my turbo seal blew, once the motor was out and taken apart, my rings were about to blow. so i guess it turned out better that way.
Once the motor blew I took the motor to RS
Sleeved the Block
pistons /rods
all that fun stuff.
im just waiting to start it now.

How much money do you have to spend? Really depends alot on that. You can run stock internals to nearly 10psi and I suppose thats around 260-290 wheel.... what exactly are you looking for?

lol i plan on doing 14psi..err 1 bar i guess 13.9..but thats gonna be high boost and 7/8psi on low boost, but i will be running a 2mm headgasket and it driven maybe 3-4 times a month
boostjunkie757 is doing 11psi 347whp

It's not the compression that kills stock turbod ITR's, it's the weak ringlands on the stock pistons that go.
Edit: And for the love of god search.

EEK, ok so maybe Top Fuel did it on a stock bottom end. Great. But, the poster of this topic was extremely vague on what he wants. I got the impression that he'd slap on the turbo and be done with it. Didn't you? Of course Top Fuel's success is in the tuning, I would think.
If a person has two options and they're about to do one of them without having knowledge on it, in this case the EVO might be a better choice, lol. However, if he has money for an EVO, he has money to build and tune a turbo Type R
I'm a little biased b/c I prefer N/A

a better approach on turbo itr is to have a daily driver, because you're much better of when something goes wrong and it will, thats being realistic, and when motor blows up, you'll have to spend few thousands to rebuild, however, you'd have to spend few thousand or more to get a new car, so theres the toss up. if done correctly you can drive several years without rebuild, if you understand all aspects, then there isn't much to worry about, blowing motor isn't the end of the world. now, evos aren't exactly fast out the line, so you will need to modify them to make them fast, thats all i will say, i dont know a whole lot or research about evos cause i prefer itr for sport compact car.
additional note: technology and tuning has improved owning turbo honda and reliability, pricing is better and people keep making more and more hp on same setups. market is more experienced so you can avoid major mistakes if done right and have a better experience. its kind of like buying 1st year of the model vs the last where many bugs have been fixed and improved.
