Default New type-R tranny, action clutch and toda flywheel! woot

Just got my car back from the shop, got my brand spankin new USDM Type-R tranny installed, along with an Action 2KS clutch and lightweight Toda flywheel. I'm lovin it! My old tranny was pretty fucked up, had 133k on it and was highly abused. This new tranny has put some new life back in to my 99 gs-R!

Now its on to the engine work...

How do you like the new tranny so far? Do you notice the shorter gearing?

argh, where do i begin. i spent way too much! i found a brand new type-r tranny on the marketplace here, got lucky. a guy was sellin a brand new USDM one for 1500, and he was in my area, grabbed that quick. got the toda lightweight chrome moly flywheel for around 400, and the action 2KS clutch for around 400 as well. also threw in some poly-urethane shifter bushings, another 20 bucks

so yeah, before labor, already spent around 2300 ended up spending around 400 bucks for the labor, so about 2800 for the entire package. argh!

lovin the new tranny like night and day compared to my old one. first gear is the same as the GS-R, but as soon as you shift up to 2nd and up, you notice the change - rpms stay up a little higher and pulls much nicer. gonna be eatin more gas tho! 5th gear revs a little above 4k rpm, almost to 4.5 when i'm goin 80, compared to being at exactly 4k at 80 with my old gs-r tranny, so freeway gas mileage is gonna suffer a little the LSD is also really nice! hittin corners and accelerating is much more fun now

yeah, alot of abuse to that thing plus, my cars only a 99 and it has 133k on it already, so its seen alot of miles pretty quick. i'm definately gonna take alot better care of this tranny!

so now i guess its on to engine work... time for a rebuild!

Higher RPM does not always mean more fuel consumption.

If you are going the same speed, you are putting the same load on the engine; And at 80mph, internal resitance is going to be a negligible variable; Therefore either gearbox is going to be using the same fuel, at either 4k or 4.5k.

sweet that does make sense. its just turning more rpms, but using less gas per turn... i gotcha

toda flywheel is nice. it wasn't as drastic a change as i would have thought as far as the revs dropping off quick. everyone i talked to said that it was gonna be a huge change, like u take your foot off the gas in between shifts the it drops to 0 rpm instantly. to me, it doesn't feel all that much different, maybe those people had super light aluminum ones. the toda is made of chromium molybdenum, 8.5lbs, and so far i like it alot. i didn't realize how heavy the stock one is until i held it in my hands, the toda is soooo much lighter! when you are revin up in v-tec land you notice a difference for sure, and the low end didn't suffer as much as i was afraid it might. no noticable loss in power in the low end.

yeah the type-r tranny has LSD foo! lol. gotta love it.

i think next i'm going to be gettin some smaller rims (riding on heavy 18's right now, look cool but slow) and also get a rear upper and lower sway bar for handling. after that, i'm gonna save up for the engine work! can't wait!

i know how u feel right now with that trans...i remember my gsr trans used to pull on the right when the vtec hits really hard specially when u launch that to high rpm...now, u can launch that thing to high rpm and it will go str8 and u can feel the short gearing on 2nd gear, third, and most noticeable gearing is 4th..i think 3rd and 4th is the shortest if im not mistaken...and the car does not take forever to get to vtec. Have fun man and enjoy that trans

definately gonna enjoy it! i'm really glad i threw in the new tranny. i'd recommend shorter gears to anybody after doing it for myself, definately takes much more advantage of the v-tec!

considering the trans is really good without grinds and all that, thats really good price even without the 6puck...take it easy on the trans when u get them...its a night and day difference from LS to ITR trans...enjoy the short gears...

the JDM ITR tranny has even shorter gearing than the USDM one, so you'll notice a big difference. as far as the 6 puck, be careful if you are going to use it as a daily driver, it might be a little rough. make sure its sprung and not unsprung.
