Default Is it worth it? 87 Civic Si

125k miles on it, guy wants 875 for it. (He's clueless on the car.) Problem is he noticed it sputtering, we looked at it today. Since it was dark it was hard to tell what the problem was, is burning some oil and wasn't driven for a few weeks. Could be plugs, wires, the timing belt needs done. I believe its the D15 motor which I have been told is a rock solid motor.

Considering offering him $400 since the problem just came up after he put the car for sale. Is it worth it?

Would make a decent HS/H5 car IMO.

it'll make a good h5 car for sure. if you plan to go that route, pick it up. just check for rust near teh rear suspension arm and in the normal 'old honda' spots

Its got usual Honda rust.

Any other things to look for other than the rear suspension arm rust? Not very familiar with older Civics.

3G Civic/CRX's rot at the back of the rockers in front of the rear wheels. If this gets too bad it affects the integrity of where the trailing arms pivot.

I'm also sure it has holes in the floorpan in the rear seat footwells just ahead of the fuel tank. Mine was a Florida car most of it's life and it still has that problem. There is an exposed seam that scoops up crap. The biggy is where the panhard rod bracket welds to the floor. They tend to rip out too.

Great car. ITB, H5, HS, CSP, STS2, EPrep, G Prod.
Its competitive in all of those places. Assuming the rust isn't too bad, these things are virtually indestructable.

1987 Si in HS? You guys better check the book again

Click here to see the true class for the 86/87 Si

I contacted the SCCA about why that is and they said..."because". I don't think the car fares too well against the Mini S, but it may be good in STS.

True... but in this case it was right. 87 would be in GS.

Where is it located. If you don't want it I'll take it. I seriously want to pick up another hatch for a street car even though I do drive the racecar on the street.

I used to have an '86 Civic Si--fun car. As other said, watch for rust. Mine was really clean, but I have seen some rust at the base of the A-pillars, too.

Those were cool ones, too. I was thinking about my $1500 Challenge car. It has since been owned by Mike King and Grady Wood, so it's neat to see it still out there. I had shortened Tokicos, Jackson Racing camber plates, and some other goodies. The Integra-powered '86 Civic was awesome.
