Default timing distributor advanced all the way

92 civic vx D15, I tried to set the timing, yes I have a timing light, and I did jump the plug in the kick panel. All is good when I set timing to 16 BTDC. I drive around the block and it is retarded again few degrees past 14 when I check it in my driveway. My distributor is all the way advanced no more room for adjusting advance.(towards the firewall) it keeps loosing timing, I have no CEL codes either.

TIA

Might be off a few teeth...I think if the timing is off, the ecu tries its best to correct it...

it will most likely only bee of only one tooth if it is still running ok.

I suggest looking at cam timing first and if that is not your problem then try a different distributor to see if that is your problem, your CYP/CKP sensors could be on their way out and it is throwing you timing out of whack.

I've always heard that moving the dizzy towards the radiator was advancing. I've seen many cars applying this too. Maybe thats why after you drive it you are retarded again.

After lots of search I found that 60% people say moving dizzy towards firewall advances, then the rest say towards the radiator is advancing... WTH? A guy drove with the dizzy turned to the firewall and it drove like crap, then he turned it the other way and it ran way better. Stock engine too. dunno...

Also if you do it either way, don't you have to jump the service conector? Is that one by the ecu also?

Just think of which way the engine rotates. Moving the top of the distributor towards the firewall is moving it ahead of the engine, therefore advancing it.

I'm almost certain that turning it toward the firewall is advancing. You don't need to know because you have a timing gun. Turn it and check which way the marks move. On the newer K series Hondas it might be backwards.

VX base timing was 14 not 16 I thought. It will say on the label on your hood.

You sure it's the right distributer?

That's what I was just thinking of. And you have to jump the service connector before you do anything right? Or the ecu will try to set it back to stock?

They are sensorsfor timing. They are all located in the dizzy. Heres the breakdown of what they do:

CKP: Determines the timing for the fuel injection and ignition on each cylinder. I also detects engine RPM.

CYP: This sensor determines the position of the cylinder for sequential fuel injection to each cylinder. It is a part of the PGM-FI system.

No. OBD1 also needs to be jumped. You would be surprised how much the ECU can correct the timing.

Ya I have it moved all the way back towards the firewall, I still get a little stutter while light acceleration, its missing. I'll check the cam timing this weekend. Hopefully thats all it is, and not the dissy.

I dont want to spend any money on this motor, I am saving up for a b-swap.
