idle problems need help/ideas what can i do

Default idle problems need help/ideas what can i do

got a 92 hatch with a b16a3 in it started to idle weird what can i do when i start the car it will rev up to about 2,300-2,000 rps and stays there intell it warms up then it will idle down fine. what could it be i have replaced the AIC what else could it be thanks for the help...

isnt there some kind of fast idle control that makes the car idle higher when the egine is cool?

if not i would look for vacuum leaks

ya i think thats normal, if its only till the engine warms up then goes back to normal, i don't think its anything to worry about, but like he said check for vacum leaks, maybe your ignition timing

It's far from normal. Both my Hondas' do not have a fluxating idle, when it starts, when I'm at a stop light. I would try the idle adjustment screw on the intake manifold.

Also, when I did have a fluxating idle on my Civic. It turned out that the throttle cable would get stuck a little bit when my foot would be off the pedal which caused it to jump up and down. Try putting your foot on the backside of the pedal pulling your foot towards you.

it can not be good at all for a cold motor to idle at 2,300rpms intell it warms up i will check the vacum leaks but i still dont see what it could be.....

Touch that idle adjustment screw, and i'll spank you! They're factory set and shouldn't be tampered with. It IS perfectly normal for your car to idle up until it warms up a little.

how can it be perfectly normal for a car to idle at 2,300 rps??? everyone today when you go to start your car rev your car that high and hold it there and see how much you like it...

and it is not like it revs that high and comes down it stays there tell the temp heats up...

if you tap the gas while it's idling high, does it knock the idle back down or is it constant until it warms up?

It is normal for a B16A3 to idle around 2,000rpms while cold, then idle slower after the engine warms up. My B16A3 has exhibited this behavior since I bought the car in 1997 with 4 miles on the clock.

it is normal for it to idle up at a cold start to around 2000 rpm give or take some... but it should gradually come down as the car warms up... it shouldnt stay right there until it gets warm then shoot down

how long have you owned this car with this setup? I just noticed you live in Oregon and i assume it's starting to get a little colder in the mornings. This might explain why you've just noticed this behaviour recently.

my car is a 93 civic lx stock, when it first starts the cold idle is 1500 rpms after it warms up it is 700 - 900 rpms.

it is normal for them to idle higher when cold, and it will kinda fluctuate a little depending on what electronics you have running at the time.

i have had the car for like 2 years has never done it.. this is the first time it has done it that is y i dont get it i have done like everything i can think of and have been told to do

did you do anything to the car just before it happened? Maybe something you did recently fixed a problem that you never knew existed and now your cold idle works???

Every car made in the past 30 years (at least) has come out of the factory with a fast idle when the engine's cold. I've worked on Detroit Iron beasts that are older than me and they all had fast cold idles.

2300 certainly does seem a little on the high side but since it wasn't doing it before, that means something isn't working correctly. Maybe whatever it is has sprung to the other end of it's range of it's motion and is stuck high instead of low.

Mine has done 2300 on occasion. I've been paying strict attention to where it's been idling since this discussion started, and it seems a little random where it ends up idling. Seems like it usually ends up at 1700 on the low side and around 2100 on the high side, but I've seen 1500 & 2300 as extremes. Maybe it depends on coolant temperature, intake air temperature, etc.

I think on B16s the cold idle is controlled by FITS (Fast Idle something-or-other System) and IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). Replacing (or removing & cleaning) those components should bring your idle down a little, they're on the back of the throttle body and a bitch to work on with the engine installed (at least in a Del Sol VTEC's cramped bay). I think. Since mine are all still working I haven't had to replace anything, so I don't know first hand. Hard to wade through the misinformation until you actually do something.

i have put a new IACV and TPS no different, yes it did start after i replased the clutch but it did not start to idle high for a few days maybe a week after i did the clutch that is y im so confused with it..
