5th gen h22A4 engine removal and installation
This might seem like a weird question... I am new to hondas and bought my first honda recently. I have worked on tons and chevys pulling out several RWD engines. I am very good in mechanics (have built several Domestics). I really like the power my 1998 Honda Prelude has, but I got a great deal on a well built H22A. I want to do all the work myself (pulling it out and installing). I was wondering if there are any tricks to pulling out the engine. Do the engine and tranny come out together? Which mounts should I undo first Etc. Any advice will be appreciated. THanks alot.
First go buy a shop manual for your car, it will tell you the order of mount removal and installation. Yes remove the engine and tranny as one unit. The engine/tranny combo can be removed from the top or bottom( if you have a lift or jack the front end up really high). Remove the radiator so you dont damage it. You said you have mechanical ability, then armed with a manual should be a very easy job. I did my engine/tranny swap in my driveway with a hoist to pull engine/tranny out the top. If you pull it from the top beware the crank pulley is huge and will try to snag on things, just get a couple friends to help push/pull/move the engine tranny combo around when lifting from the top.( if you choose this route). Hope that helps.
