tranny problems on my 2000 Integra GSR.. 4th gear grinding and rough pedal
first off, I don’t know much about cars, but I try. I just got a great deal on 2000 Integra GSR with 60k miles and the tranny has two problems. I asked this question here before, but didn't get any resolution so I figured I'd ask again since I got a better description of the problems.
1. the car's (clutch?) grinds when I shift to 4th at 4500+ rpms. I can make it not grind by shifting gently, but when I try to force it in quick it grinds. ONLY 4TH GEAR DOES THIS! All the other gears are fine. The clutch doesn’t slip or pop out of gear. Would a new clutch kit (say Exedy stage 1) fix this problem? If not, what would?
2. the clutch pedal starts feeling harder and rougher after pushed in 60-70%. It sounds like it squeaks a little but its very hard to hear.. much easier to feel. It’s almost like it has a second level. I was told it's probably the 'pressure plate'.. what do you guys think?
thanks in advance

1.) Bad Synchros
2.) Not sure. Maybe the clutch is going. Try bleeding the clutch hydralic system first.

what exactly are 'synchros'? and where can I get them from? expensive? I have a friend who can install clutches and stuff.. would he be able to install it?

Yeah, your synchros for 4th gear are probably bad. Synchoros are the parts of a manual transmission that actually engage themselves together to change gears. The synchros are constantly turning when the car is moving. When you shift into a gear the two synchros mesh themselves together. What has probably happend to your tranny is that while somone was shifting into 4th gear they didn't have the clutch pressed in all the way and burred up the splines on the synchros.
As far as a fix, the synchro packs are very expensive and you really need the tools and knowhow when putting them in. Your best bet is to try bleeding the clucth. If that doesn't work then it would be easier to just get another GSR tranny. You may even want to swap to another tranny like an ITR tranny which has the 4.7 final drive.

buying a used tranny with a fair amount of milage on it is gonna be roughly in the 5-700 range. and the sycros are not very expensive. it s the labor thats gonna cost u. and if i could give any advice it would be just to fix ur tranny.think about it ur gonna spend an *** load of money on a used tranny and not even know what condition its in. for all u know it could be in worse condition than urs is now. if u just get ur tranny fixed it wont cost as much and u will know the problem is fixed and what condition the tranny is in.
