Default Anyone know what type of aluminum our tranny casings are?

My friend broke the spider gears in his diff and ended up with a small hole in his trans. His dad wants to try to reweld it before buying a new one. Now posts weather it is a good idea or not are irrelevent as is spockeg and my opinions. His dad is gonna have it done regardless.

So on that note I talked to the welder who is going to weld it. He said there are several diffrent types of aluminum and he said it would be easier if he knew the exact type it is.

I know for most of us, myself included, this question is over our heads. But some here will know what I am talking about. If you do know please post.

Thanx in advance!!!

Use 5356 rod, it takes more heat to melt and will force the welder to penetrate deeper. Welding a tranny casing is no big deal if you're a pro.

Word he said it was easy, he said it would be really easy if he knew the material. It is a small hole the size of a dime, nothing major like your is/was. ^ there.

yea sometimes working with those castings can be a bitch. never really know what is in that type of stuff. honda seems to use reasonable decent stuff, you don't seem em cracking too often for no reason.

The cases are casted just like the blocks and heads. They are all A356 Aluminum Heat Treated to a T6 condition.

They put titanium dust in the castings so you can't weld it.Without it bubbling up real bad.I would use 4043 because its softer and when it cools it won't try to crack as bad. Those cases are brittle and pull real bad.
