98 EX Civic Keyless Entry
Hello All,
Although I can find threads that reference this question, I cannot find a thread that covers exactly what I need.
I have a 98 Civic EX Coupe, and the factory radio was stolen from the previous owner. Is there any way to get the keyless entry to work without an OEM head unit? I know I can get a factory deck and hide it behind the dash, but That seems a rather inelegant band-aid.
Is there another "Brain" unit that I could buy and plug in to the 2 green connectors to operate the keyless entry?
If not does anyone have a stock 98ex head unit for sale? Or is there another year head unit that also operates the keyless system?
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Not that Im aware of. I have always relocated them behind the dash or glove box. If you take the face off the stereo via the two or 4 little screws on the side it will fit much easier and then it wont get all scratched up if you ever want to put it back in.
Thanks MLD
Are there any other year/Trim OEM radios that will work for my application or do I have to find another 98 EX radio? I had heard the 96, and 97's would also work but not the 99's. Is this true? Does the radio have to be from an EX or will an LX radio work?
Thanks again.

Will an LX radio work or does the unit have to be from an EX? What unit origionally came with the EX? Was it just a radio or was it cassete/ CD? Like I said I have never seen the unit that came with the car, It was stolen before I bought the car.
Thanks!
Thanks!
To solve the problem of keyless entry, just get an aftermarket alarm or keyless entry, [under $50] and wire it up, you will not need the OEM radio, the OEM radio only has the R/F section of the keyless in it, and as all you need is a low current, [about 200mA] neg. (-) door lock output, even the most basic alarm or keyless entry will work.

I agree just get a cheaper alarm system with keyless. You have the added security as well. You figure your probably pay around $50 for the stock radio anyway.

OK Thanks, Will Do.
Can anyone make some suggestions on brands. I am pretty handy mechanicaly/electrically and could do a basic install myself, but I know that the extra warrenties are usually only applicable to installs at certified dealers.
If I am going for an aftermarket system, is there a unit that will allow another input for a solonoid for an electric trunk release?
Thanks again!

I am pretty sure all of them have a trunk release chanel. DEI alarms do. You need a relay though. wire it up like so:
85: Ground
86: 12v
30:12v
87: Out to positive for selinoid
Make sure you fuse you power source and the terminal 87a is insulated or protected because is with rest at 12v.

Thanks MLD,
How much would I be spending on a quality DEI System? I believe that is the Viper brand? Can you suggest a model so that I can begin a search.
Also I see that you are not far from Chicago. Is there anywhere that attracts a good # of tuners nearby? I am pretty new to the scene and I found that going to the local hangouts / impromptu meets is one of the best ways to gather info. I ride motorcycles and found the local watering hole was one of the best sources of info around.
I am going to supercharge my civic and I read today that the motor that I have (D18y8) might not be strong enough on the bottom end to handle what I want to do. I am worried.

Viper, Python, Sidewinder, Clifford, Hornet, ect these are all DEI brands. I think all DEI products are quality so any one will work. The different models have differant features. There is a shop in Algonquin, IL called Street Legal Audio, Call ask for Miguel and tell him David reffered you to him he will hook you up. 847-854-1250. I have just started building my civic so i really am not sure about quality tuner shops in the area. Street Legal sells or can get what ever you need but they pretty much only install car audio.
Viper is only one of DEIs brands, http://www.dei.com you can spend less the $100 on a DEI alarm even if you get it at an authorised DEI retail dealer, we sell one that is called the Viper 100 for under $100 CAN. and $74.95 as door crashers during sales, good all around entry level DEI alarm built in dual stage impact, built in starter cut relay, [can be used for any "cut" function] outputs for door locks and trunk release, [needs relay for trunk] Easy install. We have sold 100s of them and the warranty return rate is almost nill.
