Default b16a1, b16a2, b16a3... what cars did these engines come in?

I was under the assumption that the b16a1 was jdm, b16a3 was obd1 del sol vtec, and b16a2 was del sol obd2 vtec and 99+ civic si obd2... is this wrong?

Sounds about right to me. Of course the JDM stuff was never more than B16A, without a suffix. People add the "1" possibly to indicate the "generation" (89-91, or a "2" for 92-95).

HTH, and please someone correct my JDMness if necessary!

The suffix applies to all USDM motors. The B16A1 is the first generation DOHC VTEC. This was (and is) stamped onto the block codes of US motors. The JDM motors don't include those codes (sometimes allowing importers to try to pass of the first generation motors as the second generation motors - there is a whole page on Hybrid detailing how to tell the difference)

The B16A1 came in the 1990-1991 Civic Si-R and CRX Si-R. I believe these were only JDM motors, but I can't gaurantee that.

Maybe I misread this...but wasn't the first generation B16 only released in Japan? It wasn't until '94 that the B16 made it to the USDM. Technically, the only US B16s are the A2s and A3s.

To my knowledge there is NO such thing as a block stamped from honda that reads "B16A1"

The B16A (no "1") came in JDM Civic and CR-X SiR, and Integra Xs-i cars too. These "first gen" pre-OBD motors were never marketed here in the U.S by Honda, and they did not have the suffix of any number on them.

Also, you cannot call the different JDM B16A motors "SiR" and "SiR II" to differentiate between the pre-OBD "1st gen" and the OBD I and OBDII "2nd gen" motors that came later. Why? Well people uaually say "SiR" for the older pre-OBD stuff, but that's incorrect to do so because there were EG SiR cars as well, which had the OBDI B16A motors. People also say "SiR II" like all the EG Civics with the B16A had to be SiR II, but that's not true. SiRII cars just had more CAR options, like ABS, more color-matched body parts, etc.

Now, to answer the question:

B16A: JDM cars. Say "1st gen" for the 1990-1991 stuff. "2nd gen" for the 1992-up stuff.

B16A3: Del Sol VTEC

B16A2: 99-00 Civic Si and later Del Sol VTEC (rare)

I have also seen a few people tell of his/her B16A6, which is supposed to be a Euro-spec VT-i motor or something, but I'm sure we rarely if ever see these here in the U.S.

My B16a in my old CRX was a B16a1 from 89-91 JDM CRX SiR and purchased from Rising Sun Motors in Cali back in 97 from Mike.

The B16a came in the 88-91 JDM Integra XSi.

So the B16a1 DOES exist.........

More info here (halfway down the page):

I knew I had seen one, but I didn't know where it came from. The suffixes, in general, have not been stamped on the blocks of the JDM engines, but they are stamped on all USDM motors.

It seems to me that Honda makes things a little confusing in Japan by not using full block codes. It would be possible (although I haven't heard of it) to take a JDM B18C GSR engine and make it "look" like a Type R with a manifold and valve cover, and sell it for many thousands more than it's worth.

Couldn't do that with a U.S. engine - B18C1 or B18C5 stamped right there on the motor.

Okay Trey, so you are saying that your old B16A was actually stamped B16A1? I have never seen nor heard of a motor stamped B16A1 before. I know people call the JDM 1st-gen **** B16A1, but I just thought that was because they didn't know better. I see the picture you posted, but that still doesn't mean that the block is stamped with a 1 on the end.

Are you saying that there was a USDM B16A1? Or are you saying that for some weird reason Honda decided to stamp ONLY a small batch of JDM-only 1st-gen with the suffix of 1? That would be the weirdest thing I've ever seen from JDM land I think.

Does anyone, especially Trey, have a picture of a real B16A1 block? I have never actually seen nor had anyone else say that they really had a B16A with the suffix 1 on it before. Is that what you are saying Trey?

I know it's not really a big deal in the end, but it's one of those technicalities that I'd like to know just to know.

And in terms of weird ****, is there really a B18C7? I've SEEN a B18C6 with my own eyes before in an Integra at the NOPI Nationals Show - guy had it come from Europe because his family was in Europe or something.

Anyone else SEE a B16A block that reads B16A1?

I really didn't think my post was confusing.

The block was stamped B16a1 and was from a CRX in Japan.

Just because none of you ever heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Ask the older hybrid owners on the Hybrid board. You guys are too young to pass judgement.

I don't have the car anymore and never too a pict of the block code since it was a known code back in the day.

What were all of you doing in 97? Homework probably lol.

I'm not flaming, just saying just cuz you don't know something, don't think it's not possible.........

Oh and the B18c6 is the euro spec ITR motor....... c5 is North America.

Tom will be on a mission now to prove my point.

Trey, you will notice that I tread a very thin line when posting about **** I'm not 100% about.

Where was I in 1997? I would have had a GS-R swap back then, but I did not have the money at all, and believe it or not, NOBODY in my area (shops, techs, etc.) had EVER heard of the swap nor did they even want to mess with it at all.

All I said was that I had never SEEN one. All of you who read this should know that I know Trey personally, and he is NOT a bullshitter. If he says he had a B16A1, then it does exist.

Don't take my word for it - I will try to find a picture now...

Well, I will still crack on those who call all the JDM motors B16A1 just as I would if a person with a JDM B18C Type R motor calls it a B18C5. I guess I'm an ***

Anyways, if any of you have a pic of the block code with the suffix of "1" on it, post it up!

My acura integra has B16a1 right on block on lower front of engine in plain site, u can't miss it. I bought this car and have absolutely no idea where it came from, all information I ever got about its origins was the son of the person who had it as his project told me his dad always would say that to him the engine was one in a million. I'll post pics soon.
