Default Tires

*searched*

I was searching for some good tire suggestions for the spring in the Prelude forum, but couldn't really find anything useful. The two threads I found are a lot of hearsay and what not... not very helpful. So, here we go.

What kind of tires is your Prelude riding on? How much did you pay? What's your opinion on the tire?

My current setup:

Tires: Yokohoma AVS ES100
Size: 225/50/15
Price Paid: $75/each at TireRack (came with car)
Tread life: Unknown exactly, but seems pretty decent.
Rating: 8/10. Feels great in dry, pretty good in wet conditions. I can corner hard with little to no indication of the tires losing traction. When they had more tread on them, it was hard to break them loose from a stand-still. Road noise is a little high, but something like that doesn't really bother me. Very good IMO, especially for the price.

I have Bridestone S-03's. I have had a GREAT experience with them. They are in need of replacing now though.

A friend got me a deal. $100/tire. 205/55/15.

I am thinking about trying Kumho MX's next.

My current setup:

Tires: Falken Azenis rt-215
Size: 215/45/16
Price Paid: $104/tire installed @ america's tire
Tread life: currently 12,000 miles
Rating: 8/10. The dry grip is unstoppable. these tires are the best when it comes to grip and sidewall rigidity. wet traction hasn't been bad, but there's still lots of tread left. they're somewhat loud, and not as comfy as say, an OEM tire, but who cares?

Previous Setups--
Tires: Pirelli P-Zero Nero (summer compound)
Size: 205/50/16
Price Paid: $88/tire tirerack (sale)
Tread life: 26,000 miles
Rating: 7/10. I liked these tires as a daily driven compromise b/w performance, TW, and comfort. Sidewalls were mushy-ish, esp compared to the rt215's, but the grip levels weren't bad. wet traction was awesome, dry traction was decent. cornering was somewhat vague, and they had a groove-tracking-wiggle problem for the first 1000 miles or so, but after beating them into submission at an a/x or 2, they settled down to be nice tires.

Tires: Toyo RA-1 (track only)
Size: 235/40/17
Price Paid: $50/tire (used)
Tread life: 1 HPDE (total life for this used set was probably 3 or 4 events)
Rating: 9/10. makes me wonder what it's like to have a set of new r-comps since these were so rad. the car was unstoppable with these tires, they handled the abuse and heat of 20 min run sessions with ease, with consistent grip levels throughout, good sidewall rigidity, and a fairly progressive breakaway (for an R-comp)

I just bought a full set of Falken Ziex ZE-512 205/55-R15 for $399 installed. Been running on them for less than a week but they feel pretty awesome! Not that my steering was bad before, but now it seems more responsive - not sure how much of that is my imagination but I'm satisfied.

We'll see what happens once Cleveland starts getting buried this winter.

Current Setup (dealership put them in):

Tires: Federal Formoza FD1
Size: 205/45/16
Price Paid: Priceless (yeah right!)
Tread Life: currently: 20,000km (12,500 miles), looking pretty good.
Rating: 6.5/10 Dry grip so so, I can easily spin the tires in second gear (might be due to my soft stock suspension too). Wet grip not so so, but not tragic. Tread durability seems to be very good, and noise levels are quite low, fairly stable at high speeds.
Notes: I wouldn't dare use them in the winter.

I had AVS ES100s on my Probe (Don't laugh!!). I liked them, but after trying other tires, I wasn't all that impressed.

I had Kumho ECSTA Supra 712s on my 95 Prelude, and those were VERY good for the money. Dry grip wasn't quite as good as say Parada Spec 2s, but they were also about half the price. They also last longer.

My next tire will probably be either the Parada Spec 2 or the Kumho MX. Falken makes good tires, too. I might get a set of one of the max performance ones.

Firestone = garbage. Actually, a lot of them are garbage. Don't just assume more expensive = better. I haven't been happy at all with any Bridgestone tire I've had, ever.

there are plenty of good threads like this one in the wheel/tire forum....

if you do insist on a thread here a better name is in order, like Prelude Tire Reviews or something...but i still fail to see how this is prelude specific at all....

edit: fine i will be useful

tire: Bstone Potenza re-01 (came from jdm land on my itr wheels...mmm)
size: 195/55-15 (stock itr size)
price paid: free.99
tread life: that depends on your right foot
notes: these tires are....well how can i state this....the ****....they take a few minutes to warm up though...if i get on it cold ill wheel hop until like 3rd.....but after they warm up good luck breaking them loose....but they wear quick hot.....you can hear every rock on the road going for a ride on the treads...and they get super loud hot
rating: 9/10 - the 1 point is for treadlife

205/50/16 AVS ES100s - Summer tire.
I got them because they were cheapish and supposedly will last a fairly long time. I rack up too many kms doing inter-city stuff. Only put 5 or 6 thousand kms on them so far, and they're nicer than my old RE92s. (That's saying a great deal, I know)

195/60/15 Blizzak WS-50s - Winter tire.
Phenominal. I'll probably get a more compromising winter tire next time, though, and probably in stock size. These things are great in the snow but sucky anywhere else, and I don't need something quite so hardcore.

As an aside, tire prices in Canada suck. Think $150/tire for a stock size ES100 kind of suck.
There has got to be a tire rackish place for Canada that has realized that the dollar is no longer at 65 US cents.

Current setup

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712s 205-50-16 Stock 5th gen size.
These came with the car. As some of the other budget performance tires theres mixed reviews about them, they seem to be holding up ok altho during some recent canyon runs they were making a lot of noise which made me unconfident. This is my first set of "performance" tires so I dont have anything to compare them to.

Heh, in case you haven't noticed... we get ripped off big time on ALL car parts in Canada.

Go for the Azenis rt-615s. They are amazing. I have had around 15 sets of high performance street tires and these are some of the best. The only ones that I have enjoyed more are my AO48s that were on my evo.

The 615s held up very well at the track also.

BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KDW type 2
205/55/15
$104 a piece thru a friends shop but saw them for $110 on tirerack or tire direct(can't remember which one)
9/10 - I love these tires. the dry traction is really good. the side wall are extremly stiff (expecially for a 55 series). road noise is not bad at all really didn't notice much difference between them and all weather tires. the best part about these tires is the wet traction. they kick *** when it comes to rain. i couldn't believe it. overall for a dry tire i would say they are about average for a performance tire, but for wet they are frickin awesome.

Toyo Proxes. Bit slippy when new for the first few hundred miles but extremely grippy after that!

I had these on a 450bhp Evo II and they are a very good tyre in the dry and wet.

Autocross Tires:
Hankook R-S2 225/45/16 ~$90 per tire
Excellent dry grip. Bareable in the wet. Not that noisy for how grippy they are. Crappy milage.

Previous DD Tires:
Goodyear GS-D3 215/40/17 ~$133
Very Good dry grip. Great steering feel. Unbeatable in the wet. Very quiet for a performance tire. Decent milage. These were my DD spring/summer/fall tires until I put 400 lb/in springs in the car. Now the combo of the low-pro tire and stiff suspension is too much on the PA roads. I wish they made this tire in a 225/45/16. I'd consider buying this tire in the stock size for DD duty.

Possible next DD tire: Falken FK451. I've heard a lot of good things about them from sources I trust.

Winter Tires:
Kumho Ecsta ASX 205/50/16 ~$90 per tire
I was very impressed with the grip and comfort of these tires for the money. Decent in the rain. Not so good in the snow.

I've also owned the Bridgestone S-03. While it was a very capable tire I wouldn't buy them b/c of the high price. You can get tires just as good for cheaper.

I've run:

215-40-17 Yokohama Parada Spec 2's. Lasted me 8k but gripped in dry weather awsome.
215-40-17 Kumho Ecsta ASX.....Have used for around 6,000 and still have 8/32's These are on my extra rims for All Season Conditions. Dry Traction is still Great. But in the Rain it's unbelievable.
215-40-17 BFG Scorcher T/A's These were weird. They gripped really well but wet tracktion was a joke. Slip and slide.
215-40-17 Nitto Neo Gens....These are awsome. They handle great and are really sticking so far. Also in the rain they still had good traction.

It all depends on what you want. I have two sets of rims. So I have one set all season performance and one set dry traction performance.

Also I like Asymetrical Tires instead of Directional. Since my negative camber cups tires I can rotate them side to side. .....keeps noise and ride quality good.

NITTO NEO NEOGEN ZR'S

I am currently sporting NITTO NEO NEOGEN ZR'S. I have them for about a month now, they are super grippy and seem to be doing very well so far, suppose to do quite well with the negative camber also, size wise...215/40ZR-17 87W, I got these for 98$ shipped per tire with lifetime warranty. Pretty sick, you should check em out.
