99 SS vs. Turbo Type "R" update!.....Long
After I laft the office I headed home to rejet for the 200 shot nd put the slicks on. Calld one of the guys in the car club to come over with his lap top to run O2 readings as I increased jetting sizes. About half way through the changes my cell rings and its the kid with the type "R". He tells me to meet him at 9pm at the Matlby intersection on Highway 522 (This time of night, no traffic out there) and he said to bring cash because he didnt accept checks! This also meant it would be a long 1/4 run. Once all of the jets were changed, couple passes made to make sure O2's werent reading lean and checking tire pressure on the micky thompson ET's and I was ready. After making the O2 check passes, ellis says that if I can hook the car would easily do a DEEP 11 sec pass at a track maybe break high 10's with this big of a shot. But he wouldnt recomend using this big of a shot more than a couple of times until I upgraded the internals of the motor.
I got there around 8:30 and he was waiting with about 20 other cars (I hate to say it but almost all of them were afflicted with the disease most commonly refered to as "rice" or "Bling Bling"). I pull up in an unlit section of the road so not to give away the slicks, I dont see how you could miss them though, Fikse's on the front and Weld ultra lites in the rear. get out and am swarmed by people telling me I am going to get spanked. This got me pretty nervous, thinking if that many people say he is a runner, he probably is. Finally he comes over and starts talking to me. Heres about how it went:
Him: Didnt actually think you'd show up
Me: And miss all the fun, naw I had to be here.
Him: You bring the cash?
ME: All 500.00, brand new ones too, what about you?
Him: I got the cash. You think you can really beat me? You and you domestic piece of **** are in for a supprise.
Me: Lets do this
Him: You want the bump?
ME: No lets do this heads up, I dont want any excuses after this is over from either of us.
We decided on having one of his guys go down to the end of the track with Ellis and they would both verify who won and hold the cash. I wasnt worried about collecting if I won due to Ellis's sheer size and he would also be fair if I lost and give my money away and laugh at me for the rest of my life. Another one of his guys would start us.
I head back to the car, get in nd start running the standard systems check. Fuel pressure:good, oil pressure: good, bottle pressure:1130psi. It had been warming up since I left the house.
I pull up to a crowd of people waiting, he starts to heat his tires up and pulls to the guy starting us. I hit my line lock, stick it in 2nd, wind it up to 3 grand and dump the clutch. I watch the speedo climb to 70mph and hold it for about 10 seconds. This is when I started getting nervous, all of the what if scenarios start going through my head, sweaty palms etc etc etc. I usually never race for cash, it creates bad blood over a stupid race, not only that but what if I spin the clutch, blow the rear end? Oh well, to late now. I could hear his freinds yelling "say bye bye dumbestic boy" amoung a few other choice things. Thats when I purged. If youve ever seen an NX propurge, it looks like a nuclear blast coming from the hood of the car. That shut everyone up real quick.
The guy starting us lines us up, I stall to 3 grand and could hear his turbo whinning pretty good. The guy drops his arm and I dump the clutch and stick it. I dont think my car ever hooked so hard but he was right there with me. At the top of first I had 1/2 a car on him. I hit second and start walking away from him. Thats when I glanced at my fuel pressure.....Looked good, **** it, I squeezed the botton. My Maximiser was set so all of it hit at once and in mid second gear I knew the tires wouldnt blow loose. When the shot hit it was like being strapped to a cruise missle for me. I t was almost hard to keep up with the shifting because the motor was winding up so fast. I looked in my rear view and all I could see was his lights, a long ways back. When I looked down at the speedo It was climbing passed 135 and I had enough distance to know if I let up he wouldnt even come close to catching me.
I passed Ellis and his guy, layed on the brakes and turned around. The kid in the type "R" just kept on going down the road. I got out of the car to collect the cash and the guy holding it handed it over and said "what the FU%& do you have done to this thing?" I said "Just bolt on's and a big shot". He was cool and handed over the cash. He told me that the type "R" was an 11 second car, but I beat him by at least 8 to 10 lenths. Ellis asked if anyone had ever seen the guy run or seen a slip. He said no thats just what the kid was telling everyone. Ellis said that he would bet it was a low 13 second car. We talked for a bit and then left. the kid in the "R" never came back to talk to us.
I am sure I will see him at the office tomorrow, I dont get why he just kept on going. Even when I take an a$$ beating I always go back to give the guy props on a good race.

This post was in now way intended to flame imports or degrade anyone that owns or drives an import car. Just the results of some questions I had about a car I had never run before I made in a previous post. I am sure if we ran the twisties it would have been a totally different story or even the same results just alot closer.

My buddy told me that if the "R" was built like the kid was saying that it would have a real strong top end pull so I wasnt taking any chances. I have seen turbo civics that hang with the LS1's and then start walking away on the big end.
good run
, you should time your car to see what is capable of on the track #'s , to see what #'s you are at ..

WTF? The ITR dude kept going after the race? Sounds so cliche a la Fast and the Furious with all this NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWZ purge this and that.
Oh, BTW, any sexy gals at the end waiting to be your bitch? That would have been the ultimate icing on that story.
Good read though, very prose

Good job! I'm sick of these folks that think the ITR is a gift of the gods. It's a great car, and I'll never get rid of mine, but it's not a drag racer. I don't care how much you do to it. FWD+drag=
I can't say I'd ever buy a domestic but I sure can appreciate them. Good job taking down Mr F&F. You obviously have the more mature attitude about this (though I'm still not keen on the street racing). At least you guys made an effort to be safe.
Now bring your SS along to the autoX, then we can all have fun!
