Default static when car is on, none when off

i have a pioneer deck and the stock antenna was cut so i put in a new one today. i never checked it prior to now but when the car is turned on so only the radio comes on and the cars not running i get no static at all. when the cars running i get static like crazy. anyone know what causes this? how it can be fixed. i would really appreciate it. i tried search but came up with nothing, thanks

First thing I would do is unplug the ant. and see/hear if the noise is still there.

When you say "static" do you mean a crackling kind of sound, [like off station on the radio] ignition noise, or do you mean a whistling, whining kind of sound, [like a far of siren] alternator noise?

The other thing I would check, is the noise there when the Hu is pulled out of the dash, or only when it's in the dash?

Also is the noise on the AM and FM radio and on CD? 94

yea its like its on an off station. its on FM and i tried getting the clearest station in north county which is 92.1 a country station of course haha. it crackles until i turn off the car so just the radio is on and its clean as a bell. so i should try taking the HU out of the dash and seeing if it still makes noise?

Thats an odd symptom........ Have you tried a wire antenna? You can buy them cheap at radio shack or just stick a small screwdriver in the antenna plug but make sure you only hit the center contact and not the outside wall. The try starting the car and see if you get static it will help determine if this is in the deck or the antenna.

My guess would be that it has got to be in the car antenna somewhere maybe you have another short that only occurs when the car is on.

its a brand new antenna, its even the amplified ones. i checked the grounds. do you think since i wired the antenna(because it needs power) into the HU wiring that it could be causing that noise?

what you mean wire to the HU? theres a antenna cable that goes into the HU, but your antenna should be connecting with the stock wires at stock locations in the rear...i dont think anyone wires the antenna directly to the head unit. just do it exactly as stock and there wont be any problems

well its an amplified antenna to get even better reception so it needs power and a ground. i spliced it into the power wire off the head unit and plugged the antenna cable into the HU.

Have you tried unplugging the ant. out of the back of the HU, to see if the noise is still there, yet? 94

That was my reason for the wire antenna or screwdriver. He wont get much reception with the antenna barried down in the center of the plug. Only the center contact is the antenna the outside wall is ground to shield it from noise.

If the noise is getting in through the ant. then unplugging it completely should get rid of the noise. When you said "it's on FM" did you mean only on FM, and not on AM or CD?

If by unplugging the ant. the noise goes away, try what nsxxtreme suggested plug something into the ant. port that will only go into the ant. "mast pin", [the center thin pin] even a pc of wire with the end stripped of insulation, [as long as the pin on the ant. plug] another thing I would try is disconnecting power to the ant. amp, let us know 94
