Oil filter problem
My friend has an 87 LXI and twice oil has blown the filter. The first time it herniated the gasket and did no damage to the filter. The second time the cannister part of the filter separated from the base that screws to the housing. After the first incident, she changed the filter and I thought it might have been a defective gasket. The car was then driven over a mountain pass and it was fine and then one morning when the car was started oil sprayed all over the ground again. I know there is a pressure regulator in the pump but that usually either causes no flow or no pressure if it is defective. Anybody know something specific about Honda cars that may cause this problem? I haven't consulted a Honda Tech, but all other techs are baffled. Thank you.
I have not seen this conditon on any Honda engines. I have heard of it happening on other makes, but no firsthand experience. A clogged oil filter might cause something like this, however the oil system has an oil filter bypass valve designed to prevent this. I can only think that there is an issue with either a defective gasket... or a low quality oil filter. I recommend only the OEM filters be used.
