Ok, I am notorious for starting project threads way to early but I figured I would go ahead and start this thread and I will add to it over time...

So, I started out with a stock 93 Prelude Si... H23(2.3L DOHC Non-VTEC)... I bought an H22 (DOHC VTEC) head and all the other necessary conversion parts to make an H23 VTEC (2.3L DOHC VTEC)... I built that and it was a very fun motor for only having ~9.3:1 compression... I was planning on boosting that motor but ended up spinning the rod bearings because H23 bottom ends are not very rev friendly...

So, then I got an F23 block from a friend for $300 with 70k miles on it... The F23 block will bolt to an H22 head with some modification... You have to make a custom water-pipe (F23+H22), use an F-Series water pump with an H22 water pump gear, and block two oil drains in the head that do not line up on the block... Along with all the other pieces I had to get for the H23 VTEC... Here is a comparison between the F23 Block and H23 block...

F23/H22 (2.3L DOHC VTEC) Turbo




So Now I have an F23 Block with an H22 Head and a custom turbo kit running 6 lbs. of boost... I've been having some oil pressure problems with it but nevertheless it runs like a champ still... Made 214whp@7100 and 195wtq@4400... Very fun car to driver and excellent daily driver...
Now here is where the real fun begins... I got a 97 Civic EX for $1750... It has a 93 VX motor (1.5L VTEC-E) in it... Body is in pretty good shape, little scratches here and there... Interior is good and I already put the seats from the Prelude into the Civic... I love them... Now it is time to take the F23/H22 and the turbo kit out of the Prelude and transplant it all into the Civic... Except I will be changing from an H22 (DOHC VTEC) head to an H23 (DOHC Non-VTEC) head... So the motor will be like a turbo H23 but with iron sleeves and the torque comes up just a hair soon due to the extra stroke... And all that in civic coupe should be a whole lot of fun... I plan on using this as daily-driver/auto-X/drag-strip car...

Summary: Like I said this thread is slighty premature for the project... I am thinking of buying an adapter plate for the HF/VX exhast manifold and boosting the 1.5 SOHC temporarily until I get another H23 head and the proper mounts and axles... But anyways when it is done it should be a 97 Civic EX Coupe with an F23 Block/H23 Head (2.3L DOHC Non-VTEC) running at least 10 PSI... I'll update as new parts come in and progress is made...

 

Why don't you just put the F22B DOHC head on?

Umm... Well, I am basically... F22B head is the exact same as an H23 head... But, thanks for your input...

Yeah, his name is PirateMcFred... He was the first (on H-T atleast) to build an F23 block/H23 head... I was the first (on H-T atleast ) to build an F23 block/H22 head, and Prelittlelude was the one who started it all with his F22 block/H22 head...

pioneers thats inspired me....i will be doing a high compression 2.4L f23 bottom end with h22 head i'll keep you fellas updated.

How can I forget that... That is definitely an important find...

what would the compression numbers be on a stock f23 bottom end and a stock h22 head??? i dont know the stock compression of the f23 and is the combustion bigger or smaller then the h22??? thanx

 

F23 has a 50.5cc combustion chamber I think and H22 is about 53.7-8..... Something like that... The c/r is about 8.6:1... That is the combo I had...

 

And just an update in case anyone cares... Started pulling the prelude apart... Turbo kit and some other misc. stuff is off... Head is coming off tonight... Block, tranny, axles, shift linkage, wiring harness, etc. should all be out by this weekend and then I'm ditching the prelude... Then it's timed to get the block cleaned bored/honed, pistons and rods put in, new bearings... Slap it all together and put it in the civic... Can't wait...

 

hell yea, motor should feel good in teh civic...what mounts did you decide on using?

Is this a common problem with this conversion?? sounds to me like it's probably due to the two blocked off oil drains in the head. oil might not be able to drain back down to the crankcase fast enough and starving the oil pump...

how far off are those two drain holes in the head and block? If they arent "that" far I dont see why you couldnt just elongate them and cut the head gasket to match to get everything to flow properly.

Did you do this yourself or did the previous owner do this?? 96-98 was still cable pull on the a/c, I didn't think you could move the controls down there without having to do something weird with the cables??

there's a guy on ebay that is selling cast replica HF manifolds but with a T3 flange cast in instead of the normal outlet...sells em cheap as hell too

 

you should sell me that bottom end lol...
