Motor blew up tonight, b18a1 hole in block
Ok well heres the story, Ive had my b18a1 swap for about a year now and about 2 weeks ago I kept on having an oil light flickering problem. Well it seemed to go away. Today I drove my car to school and my car was making a loud clunking noise, I thought it was something with the transmission. I thought nothing of it and kept on driving. Well tonight as I am pulling onto my street with the clunking louder and louder knowing my motor is about to blow any minut.... BOOM and the car shuts off and theres smoke everywhere. I get out and theres a small fire in my engine bay. Find a large hole in the front of my block at the 3rd cylinder. The motor was n/a with about 200k miles, can anyone explain to me exactly what might have happened? There was plenty of oil in the motor at the time and no CEL or oil light. Sad to see this motor go
Yeah usually when my oil light comes on i check the oil. Oil usually has a pretty important purpose for the engine. And when it makes a clunking noise, I dont assume it's no big deal, especially if my oil light has been flickering on.
Yeah my bad i was doin too many things at once but he said the oil was flickerin on which might have been somethin with the pump, I would have got it checked out personally. Sorry to hear your loss though.

see the thing is as soon at this happened I got my car towed home and tore the whole motor apart and checked out the oil pump and it seemed fine... put it back together and no oil light and then all of a sudden 2 weeks later it blows up

I have a spare head and block and I want to put that together for the time being. Now I want to hone the block with one of the DIY tools and put new piston rings. If I do this what rings would I buy?
.020" OVERSIZE PISTON RING SET
.000" STANDARD SIZE PISTON RING SET
.030" OVERSIZE PISTON RING SET
.040" OVERSIZE PISTON RING SET ??

Good question on the Machine Work. With just a hone, you should probably use a set of .000" Standard rings. The other sizes are for if your pistons are larger and your cylinders have been bored over between .020" and .040". Good luck.

Chances are it was the oil pump. I had the same problem with mine. Plenty of oil, flickering oil light - Then a week later knocking and a week after that rod through the block. It was indeed the oil pump. Of course if you took it apart weeks earlier and the pump was fine, I still would have replaced it to be on the safe side. Sorry for your loss. Goodluck with the new motor.
You should immediately pull over and stop the engine the first time you see the oil pressure light. That light is tripped by EXTREMELY low pressure; on a D-series it is around 4.3psi, which is practically nothing. If you drive along with it flickering, its only a matter of time before your engine grenades.
As the others mentioned, if your oil level is fine then the first item to check would be the oil pump.

I would have to say that while you have the whole thing appart I would take the head into a machine shp and have them check it out and tell them what happned. Since it was your oil pump that went bad that means you had low oil pressure every where you should get the head checked out.

the large clunking you heard was most likely your oil deprived cams. take a look at it im sure theres going to lots of wear and tear in the head.

actually the head is fine except the rod broke and the piston hit the intake valves and bent them on the 3rd cylinder...
