Default Gear ratios comparison... Manual versus automatic

Transmission ratios for the new 2006 Civics. I am 95% swayed to the manual, but I'd be looking at a late November delivery for a color I'd actually like and now that we only have 2 cars again (hers and mine) she'd be a lot happier if I came home with an automatic vs. a stick because then she could drive it, especially with the baby and all.

And dealers have automatics in stock.

Anyway... Can someone who knows gearing changes compare these for me please, are they massively different in real life... especially if you consider HS as its home?

I know it'll be slower in traditional straight line tests, but I'm thinking the auto will top 65 in 2nd with gearing like that and make wheelspin less of an issue compared to the manual.

I know 4th and 5th will be very different, but what about 1st through 3rd?

Btw: The auto is 60# heavier. And, the electronic throttle setup seems better suited for the auto than the manual based on my test drive.

Manual (4.294 FD)

1st- 3.143 / 13.50 overall

2nd- 1.870 / 8.03 overall

3rd- 1.235 / 5.30 overall

4th- .949 / 4.07 overall

5th- .727 / 3.12 overall

Automatic (4.437 FD)

1st- 2.666 / 11.83 overall

2nd- 1.534 / 6.81 overall

3rd- 1.022 / 4.53 overall

4th- .721 / 3.20 overall

5th- .525 / 2.33 overall

Thanks everyone...

The auto tranny will not put anywhere near as much power to the ground as the manual. In H Stock the loss of power compared to the manual will be very difficult to overcome, IMHO.

That said, if I were in your shoes I would get the automatic for the following reason:

In this case I think making the wife happy is far more important than how well the car will do at autox. After all, you'll always have your car to autox, right?

Thanks guys...

I appreciate the advice, but I have gone with the manual because she even said, "Buy what you're going to be happier with."

It was said with a grain of salt, but she's right, I'd probably bemoan the fact that I had an auto.

Besides, Honda automatics aren't known for being as robust as the manuals and this new 5sp. auto trans doesn't have an oil cooler... It would only be a matter of time until something in there cooked (a la TL).
