Is your speedometer working?
If not, check the cable as described here at the bottom:

If the speedometer works, and you still get the code
it may be in the cluster itself...

Either you have a short in the circuit or the vss is bad all together.

I was driving and the speedo stopped working then the code popped up. The cable is still in the tranny. I didnt realize there was a vss? is it back of the cluster?

It is inside the speedometer..

If the speedo is not working,Most likely the cable broke
inside the cable housing or it may have come loose at the transmission.

definitely sounds like the cable......same thing happened to mine. basically just shredded and was really ugly. you can get a new for about $15-20 just about anywhere. i think i paid about $15.95 + tax for mine.

I also had the same thing happen to me. First i kept getting a vss code, it kept happening for about 2 weeks. I just kept ignoring it. Then my spedo quit working. I took the cluster out and the spedo cable out of the tranny. The cable was in good condition. I put it back in the tranny and drove to see if the cable moved and it did. So I put everything back together. After doing that everything work again. No more vss code and spedo works just fine. Just take everything apart and inspect before throwing money at parts.

thanks crxben.
i have been having the code lately, but it usually takes at least a half hour of driving or more to throw the CEL at me. i often shut the car off and start it back up again as a ghetto fix for it...
but the speedo and tach work just fine, so i was thrown for a loop as to what the deal is. after your post, i guess i will just take off the cluster and inspect connections and troubleshoot it, and hopefully that will fix it. it worked for you, huh?

Yeah it worked for me... haha I did the same thing with the cel, I would turn off the car to clear it. Hopefully everything works out for you.
