timing belt?
I have a 97' gsr and i recently have been hearing this ticking/whistling noise, which seems to be coming from where the timing belt is incased..i was wondering if it were at all possible for the timing belt to start gettin lose and as a result making some noises?...can someone help...thanks in advance!

if the tensioner goes bad, then it will get loose and possibly jump timing. take either the valve cover or t-belt cover off and check the tension with a tension measurer from autozone. its alot easier/cheaper to replace the timing belt and tensioner than replacing 16 valves and maybe pistons. are you the original owner of the car? how many miles? some people who replace the belt in their garage dont replace the tensioner; maybe thats whats wrong.

My guess is that it is the valves are out of adjustment. These need to be "tweaked" every 30K miles, and if they are out of adjuctment even a 0.001 or so, they will make noise. The belt should be done at 105K or 6 years I think. Even if the timing belt were loose, you should not hear much noise from it. It is easy to remove the covers (valve cover and top belt cover) though and check it.
